if i use msn messenger on my work pc will it be detected by my employers?

yes, they can, and may have policies against such social network software. My employer does.

More than likely if they care about the security it will be watched. You may be able to do it for some time without them catching you, but someone will notice and report you...
If it is against the rules to instal and run things in the company without previous approval, then you just shouldnt do it. The reason is that you compromise the security of the company. If you just HAPPEN to bring in the new virus that is hitting the IM programs, you can look at being fired...

Yes only if they have an active firewall that monitor's ports data.
You can try changing the Messanger's usage port to port 80. Typically that is a reserve port and not monitored.

depends on your IT department, in any firm with a IT department worthy of the name you wont even be able to install MSN messanger on the PC. if you can you still have to worry about the fact that if they are actively looking for people using messanger programs then you will be caught eventually.

download messenger plus! live - a default way of hiding msn if your boss wanders past is by pressing ctrl + space bar at the same time - it looks like another program thats vital for the operating system!!

It's not detected unless he is administrator running proxy server , which will keep eye on network user activity. the same employee with same user low level privilage wonn't be able to detect you. beacuse it need special admint to sep proxy on the network.
