this sounds like a dumb question, but why is it? I am about 36 weeks and will have to go every week - is it because they want to check you to see if you are in labor, or what?
Has anybody had any case where they went and had any "news" told to them? I am just wondering, why so often. :)

Things change so much more quickly when you're that close. They do an internal exam (sometimes...some don't bother) to note any changes in your cervix that could either be normal or abnormal. Blood pressure could skyrocket at this time, which would be cause for concern and perhaps immediate delivery of the baby. Sometimes they can tell if the cord is wrapped around the baby's neck or if the baby is breech which could alter your birth plan - you may need to have a c-section scheduled to avoid complications during delivery.

The appointments are short and usually uneventful, but it's nice to know that everything is still fine and that if you're heading down a path that is not optimal, they detected a potential problem early enough to intervene and avoid a tragic outcome.

Its mainly to make sure everything is running smoothly with you and baby.
They just check things like your blood pressure and check the baby is the right way etc.
I think the checks are closer together because thats where most people have problems.

Good luck with the birth xx

I believe it is to make sure baby gets turned right, to make sure that everything is going as it should. I was told on my 39 week check-up my water broke...I didnt know becuase it was just a small trickle and didnt have a contraction until I was only a few hours from delivery..

To make sure the baby is doing ok. To make sure the baby doesn't get the cord around his/her neck. To ensure that the placenta is still doing it's job.
To make sure you're ok - this is usually the time that pregnancy induced high blood pressure happens. To make sure that you can still work, don't need to be on bed rest, etc.
There are many more reasons.
Bottom line - it's for the health and well being of you and your baby.

I went and they found that I was slowly leaking amniotic fluid. I thought because I was 38 weeks along all that pressure on my bladder was causing me to leak a little bit of urine occasionally. I was immediately put in the hospital and induced.

the further along you get hte more stress you can put on the baby. in some cases the placenta start to die and age sometimes and the baby is not getting any nutrients. in late pregnancy it is easier to develop preeclampsia and alsso the baby can always turn its self back breech. you may have an unknown infection or something or even preotein or sugar in your urine.

they check the position of baby, your cervix, and if you unlucky like me the placenta. They want to make sure everything is going ok. (full term is 37-42 weeks). Just grin and bear it. it will be over soon.
