tree. the wood is very durable and was used by early builders to make foundation piers for houses here in texas. wood also used to make fence posts, although they are not straight. other answers describing the fruit of the tree are correct. very sticky fruit. also a folk remedy for cockroach control (i believe it doesn't work) was to put cut up pieces of bois d'arc fruit in crawl spaces, closets etc. pronounced here as bodark, emphasis on the "bo". interesting stories say the wood piers still ooze sap after 100 years.
