Depends on what you are doing. If you are building something like a wall, you can use metal studs. If you are doing a fence or railing, they have them in vinyl. Your best bet is to go to Lowes or Home Depot and talk to someone there.

Laminate is substituted for some wood products. Especially furniture purchased at K-Mart, Wallmart, or even office supply stores, the desks are laminated tops or drawer fronts -- that causes the price to become reasonable, less expensive.

If you are talking about decking there are plastic products that have the pattern of wood and a choice of colors. One is called Trex http://www.trex.com/. It has the advantage of not rotting, not splintering, not needing staining/painting, and being made from recycled grocery bags.

specificity is the key to a good question!
flooring - you can use laminant but it lasts about 5 years
building something - there is almost always an alternate
soap box racer- use aluminum it is lighter
tv- you should not use wood here
