Unfortunately, many people do fall them, and lose thousands of dollars. I haven't fallen for any, but I've started "scambaiting" just a couple months ago. I pretend to be someone that is falling for the scam, but this and that keep coming up and you can't send the money for some reason. There are lots of people doing this, and several web sites devoted to their "baits". I listed one below that is good.

I just completed a month of fun leading a Nigerian scammer in circles with a crock of bullshit, making him believe that I was going to send him $550 to claim a $300,000 Sweepstakes prize from Ours Truly, our gracious hosts here, Yahoo!. Well, they're not that gracious, nor would they ever employ anyone as stupid as this bloke (despite what anyone may think of Yahoo! at times). When I realized that I wasn't going to scam him for the cost of sending the $550 moneygram by Western Union that he was expecting, I ended it all with an explanation of almost a dozen of the numerous glaringly obvious reasons how I knew he was a fraud, which was nowhere near enough to help him learn from all of his mistakes and become better at what he does. As an example of one of his smaller errors, I pointed out that Yahoo! had never advertised this or any such Sweepstakes, which would not have missed the attention of someone such as myself who is on Yahoo for four or more hours every day. I took great delight in insulting him and everything about him and he had the $%!%#@#!&ing nerve to end with "God Bless", another thing that Yahoo! would not do.

Note: a minor point of correction - it is not "149", but rather "419", from the section of Nigerian lawbooks and regulations that deal with this kind of crime.

I know of a lot of people who get these things, but no one I know has actually fallen for one. I reply to every one of these that I get. It is amazing how many flood in from time to time. All I do is ask then for a retainer fee for my services. All they have to do is send $25,000 to my PO Box and we'll do business...
