About 18...
Most students will start directly after high school. However, for every over-achieving 17-year-old, there are 2 or 3 19-year-olds (gap year students), and 2 former military members (college is subsidized through the GI bill... 21/22 year-olds), and 1 adult learner.
It probably is enough to push the average to 19 or 20... but the median age is 18.

The traditional age is eighteen, but there are a number of universities and colleges which attract more "nontraditional" students, those who did other things (work, military, child-rearing, etc.) after graduating from secondary school and are coming back to school later in life. I know of some state universities which have an average age of 27 or 28 for their undergraduate students, which would probably make the average freshman 25 or 26.

The median age is certainly 18. The average age is probably slightly higher.

Usually 18, if their birthday is before the start of the school year, or 17, if it's not.
