Poor farmers cut down trees to clear land for growing crops. But the soil is so poor that they can only grow crops on that spot for a few seasons, and then the soil is depleted. So they have to clear a new spot every few years and start over.

And lumber companies cut down trees for logs. And oil companies cut down trees to make roads so that they can get drilling equipment into remote areas.
