The universe is expanding, and has been ever since the 'Big Bang'. But it is slowing down. What will happen when it stops? Will it reverse into the 'Big Crunch' and return to its state during the Planck Era? if so, does that mean the cycle will start again and create a new universe? Does that mean there must have been universes before ours? and therefore, will there be universes after ours?

I don't expect anyone to 'know the anwser' just interested in your views and opinions.

Thanks Thddspc... I can cope with being squashed, but I don't wanna be ripped apart at the seems. I'm even more paranoid now!

:D

All the observations say the expansion of the universe is speeding up, not slowing down. i.e. all the distant galaxies observed have higher red shift than expected, and are dimmer than expected.

The universe might very well fly apart at the seams, rather than ending up in a crunch.

Hi, Chris. There is one matter that requires attention and it seems as if it has been overlooked among our stargazers .The Big Bang is still a Theory is it not ?. Or has it been proven to be correct.Until the Big Bang is no longer a Theory (which will never happen) it is futile speculating what is the universe doing. We need the whole picture before we start worrying if the universe is speeding up speeding down turning itself inside out doing a flip playing hide and seek and goodness knows what else.If science deals in facts, then they no nothing about how, why, when ,or maybe how the universe appeared (i can't say created because there is no proof ?) Of course i may be totally wrong and there is no theory because it has been replaced by probability?
Cheers.
Sorry Chris....what was your question?

"Four years ago, cosmologists announced that the universe appears to be expanding at ever-increasing speed--and that a mysterious antigravity force must be doing the pushing. Now an international consortium of astronomers has confirmed the original finding by taking a completely different approach. The new research adds to the mounting evidence that ordinary matter alone cannot mold space into the geometry that cosmologists believe it has. Instead, many now believe, "dark energy" must be added to the mix."

The universe is actually speeding up in its expansion. cosmologists are trying to figure out if there is enough mass in the univeres to eventually stop the expansion, if there is not then the univerese will continue to expand until its temperature reaches absoloute zero and everything except empty space will exist at this temperature. BUT if there is enough mass in the univeres (which there probably isnt) then yes the current thinking is that the universe could end in a "big crunch" no one knows what happens after that. i hope this helps!!!!!!!!!

Off course, the process is continuous and the process will remain in action. Multiplicity of the Universes does not seem to be real. Universe is one and only one but is continues to change in one way or the other. Material in the Universe keep on changing shape with the lapse of time as a rule of nature.

The current belief is that the universe will continue to expand and eventually the material will be so thinly dispersed a near vacuum will result.

depends on the total mass of the universe, which as yet is still under debate. haven't found all the dark matter yet.
