If life, as we know it, is accidental then it is not unique, because if it is accidental then according to the laws of probabilities of things happening by chance life may exist at several places throughout the universe simultaneously. But if on the other hand life is an expression of some singular purpose on some higher dimension – a divine purpose, then life is unique and special. And as there cannot be two different expressions of the same purpose, a purpose at its best has to be singular in its manifestation. Then there is no answer or an alternative to what we already have, but the progression onto higher forms through gradual, or evolutionary, refinement.

And then it could be possible, in the centuries to come, for human life for example, to find ways to exists without having to depend upon fabrications of carbon and other constituent elements. In the distant future life might exist in some ethereal forms as pure consciousness, for example, or as concepts and ideas we encounter in our dreams.

But on the other hand, if life is accidental, then varieties of life forms can be various. There is bacterial life, for instance, at the bottom of the Atlantic oceans closer to volcanic heat vents that thrive in intense heat and in utter darkness merely upon sulphur compounds. It then is just the matter of exploration into the wider space of the universe and discovery of the forms of life that we might not at first sight recognise to be life.

I believe that the most advanced definition of life could be formed upon the detection of the presence of a distinct consciousness. If life is defined I terms of consciousness then our knowledge about life can extend far beyond the bounds of material characteristics as we know them today.

I saw a docu-film a while back where they kept hum-ans in pods and connected their brains to massive computer to control the hum-ans population. It should be released in the shops any day now.
