An asteroid impact has several orders of magnitude greater potential for destruction.

The supervolcano at Yellowstone has an eruption potential of about 100,000 megatons of TNT. By comparison, the astereoid that wiped out the dinos had an impact that was equivalent to 100,000,000 tons of TNT (three orders of magnitude).

Both would be nasty, but the latter would probably wipe out human life.
