My 2 yr old knocked himself out yesterday morning when he banged the back of his head. Rang NHS Direct and by this time he was totally fine - running around, singing (10 mins later after initial screaming fit). he was out for at most 5-10 seconds and NHS direct advised that i should just observe him, if i was worried to take him to a+e. He was fine all day yesterday and then this morning i noticed he was having a small nose bleed, nothing major, just a really small nose bleed, (normally i would have not even noticed it and maybe thought he had scratched his nose) - this has now continued all morning and i am really worried it is something to do with yesterday. He is fine in every other respect, singing, talking, moving, playing etc, which is why i haven't taken him to casualty. Does Anyone have any advice????

Steph, Michael - thanks for answering - but there's no need to answer like that. I followed medical advice and it is more that 24 hrs since the accident, i was unsure if they were connected.
Thanks for your answers everyone - just spoke to GP and they are not concerned, but taking him to A+E just to be sure....

Hi,
Just read your question....Of course you want to do what the MD says, and what you're comfortable with, but I wanted to allay your fears a bit. If he slept soundly all night and you had no trouble waking him, it's unlikely that the head injury is severe...if he had a concussion then you would have trouble waking him. If the bleeding had anything to do with the brain it's unlikely that his only symptom would be a nosebleed because any amount of blood would put pressure on the brain and cause symptoms such as odd behavior, difficulty with vision or other senses, or seizures. You're not a bad parent for being cautious but realistic...observation and waiting until today was completely normal and taking him today is probably not a bad idea, but don't go into it thinking that you've done something horrible and the child is going to be very sick because it's unlikely that is the case!

Get him into casualty immediately and demand a scan - you don't know what's going on any more than someone at the end of a phone line.
Children hardly ever 'knock themselves out' and if it were my child, that's what I'd be doing.
I wish you the best of luck, and I hope it turns out to be nothing, but I wouldn't sit at home wondering.

Hi Hayley.....
I've just asked my uncle who's a nurse and he said you should pop him to A+E just to be on the safe side. He also said NHS direct should of told you to take him yesterday as anyone who has been knocked unconscious should go to the hospital.

He's 2 years old and he knocked himself unconscious, now he's bleeding from the nose, and you're sitting on the computer asking what to do? Take him to the doctor. Now.
Sorry if that sounded harsh but I mean, if my child hit his head like that I don't think I'd wait to have him checked.

you have to get your son to the emergency room as soon as possible. You have no idea what has happened internally and he needs a complete examination. Try not to worry as the doctors will be able to take care of the problem.

Hospital now. Better safe than sorry. It's probably nothing so don't get too stressed about it but it's not going to do him any harm to be checked out.
