wow what a question and it cannot be answered here. Go on a web design course and learn it. There are no magic shortcuts.

Since you want a shop you also want a domain name and some web space. These should both be available at a reasonable price and for a first timer could be bought from the same place.

Many webspace providers also let you use Fantastico which is a collection of easy to install web programs to help you build your web presense. I will suggest http://www.essell-hosting.com to get you started but there are many others out there. There are also many off the shelf web store programs but these are either low cost - limited stock or ouch! pricing but handle everything including stock ordering and backend payments.

You will almost certainly have a steep learning curve with any of these. I will suggest OsCommerce as it is free and part of the Fantastico package, has lots of support and many templates to change the look and feel, is quite secure and can use Paypal easily.

Good luck with your empire building. Don't forget to post here and ask for comments when you start up.

You'd need a program like Dreamweaver to design the page yourself but some websites supply free space and services to allow to have a web shop, you just need to search around on google.

If all else fails you can have a web shop on eBay.

ok, there is 2 sites that i've found to be any good that allow you to directly edit a website online and have already the layout for you to use. They are both free to use.

1. www. freewebs .com this website has a good starter selection of websites and also the ablitlity to go on and use coding to create your own site depending on skill level.

2. www.moonfruit.com this website allows you much more editing to the actual page with easy of use with text boxes, much like microsoft word, but is limited in size and also no coding as of yet

The simplest and best one would be...
Google Pages - http://pages.google.com

It's really easy to use and make - you choose a layout, choose a colour scheme and enter your text, pics etc. You can edit the HTML if you know much about that.

I have a few accounts there. I use two with the Google Pages templates and the other I upload HTML pages that I have created from scratch. Woo!

Hi,

I am assuming you have little or no experience at website creation or online selling :

I agree with Steven who says - 'Steep learning curve' in relation to building an online shop. I'm doing the same with OsCommerce at the moment and it ain't easy - it has helped me to have a web-hosting provider who is a friend of mine and can change settings on the server as I need them (And knows I need them before I even do!). He also handles the database side of things, yawn.

I'm going to suggest 3 things -

1 - Use MS Publisher to build your first few actual websites
2 - Use 'Pay Now' buttons from Paypal, NoChex or similar for transactions
3 - Get on Ebay - this will start you off with online selling

MS Publisher - Why?
- You don't need to know ANY web-code and this editor is extremely good at WYSIWYG (What you see is what you get).
- Also - begin by building a non-sales site about knitting or some other interest - with no pressure to build the perfect site, you'll get a lot of good practise
- You might already have/use it

'Pay Now' Buttons - Why?
- They are actually !easy! to set up - it's in the interest of providers to make it so.
- Other solutions can be pure torture.
- They don't require advanced server functions to work properly
- 'Security' of transactions is handled by reputable provider

Ebay - Why?
- Gets you started with online selling unbelievably quickly
- 'Inventory' in 'Selling manager pro' automates your adverts (Listings)
- Use inventory to manage listings but use Turbolister to create their layouts - it's good at WYSIWYG and gives you the web-code for the description you just wrote (Very handy for your future web-design)
- With every sale that is paid by paypal/nochex or similar, you get buyers email address on file !! this will be your MAILING LIST !! for when you launch you 'proper' online shop (I've got over 2500 email addresses to send promo's to when I launch mine! None of it will be spam as they are existing customers of my own)

ALSO:
- Use free web-space for your interest/hobbies sites but you should get a proper domain for your sales site 1 - many sever functions you will need are not active on free space 2 - it's best to seperate your business space from practise space.

Hope this helps :)

For starters you will would desire to learn HTML and CSS. some undemanding photoshop skills would be available once you're making plans on designing your website besides. in case you have the desire to make a extra more desirable website flash and java is often effective. learn HTML and CSS on the minimum.
