Hardness is of two types 1.temporary2.permanent
Temporary hardness can be removed by boiling the water&by adding required amount of milk of lime [ca(oH)2].
Permanent hardness can be removed by passing the hard water thru sodium aluminium ortho silicate[Na2Al2Si2O8.xH2O],sodium hexa meta phosphate,and by recently discovered ion exchange by resins

first of all u have to boil the hard water then after boiling the chemicals which are in the water they will finish in this way ur hard water will turn into soft water

Mel is right, use the boiled water out of the kettle when it is cold. Or collect rain water, that is supposed to be soft water, that's what I use for orchids, they love it !!

hi.... boil the water, evaporate and get cooled passing through a pipe is the cheapest one to remove the salts.
