Walking upright for a start; figuring out how to communicate, figuring out what fire was and how it could be utilized, forging a relationship with canines - - - though I am a cat lover I must admit it was a dog that took pity on a poor starving cold caveman and brought him a dead animal to eat and later the same dog brought him a flaming stick. The wheel was way down the list. Man walked upright for thousands of years before figuring out the wheel. Figuring out what to eat and how to cook it took up most of their time. Oh and figuring out that the Moon ran on a regular schedule as did the sun and in time the seasons, etc. Time was a biggie long before there were clocks & watches.
Giving it more thought definitely not the wheel and most definitely figuring out what to eat and how to obtain it. Along that course was the crafting of tools, sharpening flint and creating knives and blades for all sorts of purposes.
Peace....

As stated - wheel and fire, although the Myans managed without the wheel.
I would have to say crop growth (Corn, maize etc), leading to specialization (Trades etc). This food surplus and specialization lead directly to population growth, since women were able to raise more children.

"early man" is rather vague. you probably mean to refer to the paleolithic era that we mark as the point hominids first use stone tools, and began to practice agriculture.
that would then be the two earliest technological leaps forward: knapped stone tools ("flakes"of sharp stone), and the start of cultivation of plants and animals. we were now homeboys, with pocketknives!! :)

Fire and wheel as stated. Then the move to agriculture rather than hunter/gatherer. This allowed the folks to stay put.

Fire and written language. With fire you can cook and keep warm which helped people moving out of Africa into colder climates. With written language, you can communicate and record information such as scientific data.
