Viktor Frankl once wrote that "freedom is in danger of degenerating into mere arbitrariness unless it is lived in terms of responsibleness". Gandhi used the term "swaraj", meaning self-rule, to describe the moral strength and integrity to live without the need to be supervised or policed; but he felt that Western "freedom" never amounted to true self-rule. Is Western society going in the right direction towards true responsibility and autonomy? Is it even possible for a society to get there?

Hahahahahaaha. Society is on a continuous downward spiral in regards to morality. As people get more and more involved in their own personal lives rather than providing that social check that is so vital, people will fell that they have the freedom to do whatever they want to without the pressure that we once had in this country and all around. It will never get better so enjoy today rather than live in yesterday.

People will one day say, I wish it was like back in 2007 when everyone was morally correct and didnt do all of these terrible things.

It is possible but it wold take a massive sociological change to achieve it. An Armageddon if you like. Most of the cultures on this planet are organised into hierarchical structures with there always being those on top and those below. whilst these still function we will never attain true freedom. Quite how you'd go about that is another question entirely.

Most people don't have morals. They just follow doctrines. Will Western doctrines ever expect the individual to assume responsiblity from a moral viewpoint? Doubt it very much. Autonomy belongs to the medical profession. If you insist on it too much in the wrong way they WILL label you.
All by all for most it is just easier to follow than to lead ...

I see the problem being more that we are already too morally strong. We defend our own views with no regard to alternate views, causing conflict. Laws work when a small community has power to decide over them. The biggest challenge for the 21st century is that we come into contact with so many people who have different morals and laws. Yet we still expect them to abide by ours.

People will never be truly free in this world. We don't have enough moral strength and integrity. For me, the answer is no.

Yes it is unrealistic. In the US three hundred million people would have to think alike. Right now we have 300 million opinions about everything.

Yes it is unrealistic for anyone to expect that as you will be labeled as terrorist and be thrown into a jail far away from your home, with out any recourse to justice.
