I think we will see some more unmanned missions first, to drop materials and supplies, building equipment, etc. If all that goes well, given a few years after that, a manned mission is possible. NASA clearly has the ability to land delicate equipment, such as the sojourner and still keep it operating, so the capability is there. It just takes money and the willingness of the astronauts to survive the journey.
Incidentally, the journey would not take 7 years as others have said but between 6-9 months, so it is not an overly long time, provided there is some room to move.

John Charles, a NASA Analyst, is reported on the website listed below to have said of a manned mission to Mars

It would take six years of travel each way (not the information given in answers above.) Exposure to radiation while traveling and while on Mars would be the big problem.

" Lack of a medical facility could turn a mundane injury into a life-threatening situation;
Psychosocial" pressure will be high in a small group isolated for months or years;
Zero or reduced gravity causes bone and muscle loss;
Dangerous radiation particles are abundant beyond Earth orbit"

"An astronaut in a six-month journey to Mars -- the time required with conventional propulsion -- would be exposed to about 0.3 sieverts, or 0.6 on a round-trip. Eighteen months on the surface (if it takes so long to get there, you might as well stay awhile!) would bring another 0.4 sieverts, for a total exposure of 1 sievert.

Limits set by NASA vary with age and gender but range from 1 to 3 sieverts."

Not anytime soon. It takes over 7 years to get there. I can't imagine anyone to cope with being cooped up in a tiny cylinder for that long.

Have you experienced being on a plane on a long haul flight. After the first 5 hours you start getting fidgety and wish you could get out from the confines of that metal tube.

Assuming no technical errors or problems, imagine enduring this feeling for 7 years in no gravity. How about your food and water supplies? How about waste disposal? What if you fell ill? Just a few of the many problems they need to resolve.

And when you get there do you think your muscles will be able to support you after being unused properly on board? How about survival? Will you be willing to spend another 7 years to get back to earth?

Imagine wasting at least 14 years of your life under such conditions just to go to Mars!

We may very well see it in our lifetime,yes.But it will take more attention to what we can discover in space vs who we can destroy on earth than this administration is willing to give to it.

And then we must also consider the impact the religious right has on stalling progress of any kind.But speaking scientifically,
it is downright probable that we will be able to travel there soon.

Mostly, first the robots will land there and set up all facilities and then about during 2020 there will be a Mission.

it'll take a long time because theres more things happening in the world now than at the time of the moon landings and i think its going to be a combination of country's that are going to put money into it.

Not in our lifetime, we lack the technology to get people there, unmanned craft, sure, but not people. We should just concentrate on the ISS

Technically it is possible within 10 years. Economically who knows...
