That's exactly what I was thinking, they must be thinking along those lines that he does have something to do with it,although exactly what ,only time will tell.I really don't see why they would go to the trouble of digging up his pool for nothing.Speaking to someone Else about this today ,and she reminded me that the police use thermal imaging to see if there is anything buried under slabs and behind wall etc..maybe they thought there was something there,or why would they dig it up.? I just hope this comes to and end soon

The portuguese police do not like to inform teh media of any goings-on, and it is actually unclear whether he is a witness or a suspect yet.

But lets be fair, they wouldnt go round digging up his patio and draining his pool and checking his house forensically if he was just a witness would they?

And he was trying to hide his face in the back of a police car - sounds to me like a guilty man.

They say they have questioned another man and a lady also, and lets not forget that possible "sighting" which was of a little girl of Maddies description with two men and a woman in a British car. However, his mother has given him an "alibi" - apparently they were both at home together on the night of her disappearance.

EDIT: To Ste B above me - It says on BBC News 24 that he is being "treated" like a suspect but it has not been confirmed.

I was thinking the same thing. If he is innocent, his career will be ruined and his name dragged through the mud thanks to the journalist that reported him.

I think the police are grabbing at anything they can, to make it look like they are doing their job and have found something. Maybe this man looked liked he was getting too involved with the inquiry, but he has a daughter the same age who's appearance resembles Madeleine, so maybe its a little bit emotional for him.

Maybe he was genuinly concerned and wanted to do his best to help. I really dont think its fair to judge him at this stage, although it did look at a bit sinister when i read on the news that they were draining the pool?

His mother appears to be normal person who loves children, and some other lady on the news discarded all the claims as being utter nonsense.

The latest so far is that he has been released, and no arrest has been made. Its all a bit iffy in my opinion.

Yeah Weed - I think the police are trying to play this
down. They said he has been bought in a questioning as
a witness and not a 'suspect'
Theres' something suspicious about this.
For them to actually have dug the pool
and slabs, they must have some concrete evidence!
(No pun intended!)

If i had nothing to hide I wouldnt care if they dug my pool. If it was going to lead to finding Madeline then I would let them look to show I was innocent. If the police had searched the whole area properly within hours of her disappearance then maybe she'd be found by now

This happened to the first guy who was arrested in the Suffolk Strangler case, but who was later released. The police tore his place apart too.
When this sort of damage is done to a home, does the 'suspect' get compensation when he is released?

In portugal things are different and if you had listened to sky news just now it says - in portugal a suspect is called a witness until they are charged. He is a suspect.

I'd be pretty annoyed, but we may not be hearing the full story. He must be viewed as a possible suspect for them to do that.

I think if he is found to be completely innocent he will get compensated. He has nothing to hide if not guilty.
However does seem his life will be in ruins if this never gets solved, the doubt will always be there.

Because they probably can't call him a 'suspect' until they have some kind of evidence. It'll be a silly legal ruling. They've released him now.
