While conducting an interview, I do not ask a candidate about their sexual preferences. I do not ask their age. I do not ask their religion. I do not ask if they consider themselves handicapped.
I may notice a necklace with the double female sign intertwined. I may notice a lot of grey on their hair. I may notice a cross on their necklace. I may notice a wheelchair. (LOL...ok, I WOULD notice a wheelchair, but I may not comment on it)
Quite frankly, if the candidate has the skills, education, ambition and abilities that fit the job description, they go into a "pile" of possible candidates. If they are rude, unable to answer simple questions without a ten minute break, too open about their personal lives, or have had too many jobs to list on four sheets of paper, their resume will go into a "do not hire" pile.
I'm looking for a person that can and will do the work; Who will not sue the company for disability if they get a paper-cut; who is in possession of a personal sense of right from wrong; who has the drive to make the best product they can...you get the idea.
I do not care if they are gay. I do not care if they are old. I do not care what race they claim. My interest is in hiring the person that fills the company's needs. Attendance, work history and ability matter.

No company can refuse to employ you because of your sexual orientation. This is discrimination. Maybe they could refuse you on grounds like not suited to the job etc, but i guess this is happening and youre thinking its because youre gay. Well mate all i can say is if youre a bit of an extrovert and outwardly gay maybe you should tone it down a bit jus to get your foot in the door. When we go to work we all to some degree suppress ourselves to blend and go with the grain. Dont think of it as letting your self down its jus something we all do so we dont piss too many people off. There is such a wide spectrum of personalities out there if we all acted like ourselves we would end up killing one another!!!

First off in the US, contrary to what a few have posted, there are no Federal anti discrimination laws that include gender orientation.
However, almost all large companies have this policy in place. It's almost 100 percent of Fortune 500 companies that have anti discrimination policies in effect and many young managers are now nearing the top ranks and are openly out and gay.
No one really cares what you do in your private life, just as long as you don't cause a problem at work.

Hi,
in answer to your question, you are guided by the equal opportunties act which does not allow any discrimination towards ethnicity, colour, race, creed, disability, or sexual orientation.
There is an act of parliament that dissallows discrimination against you,
sexual discrimination act 2001.
However, in reality, you do NOT have to tell anyone about your homosexuality when applying for a job UNLESS in the job description they are allowed by an exeption to not employ homosexuals. ( they sometimes state this as a hint * We are a christian company and believe our workers would want to follow the full christian ethic *
However, you may still apply for these and any other posts.
Also companies do not like to see fraternisations amongst thier staff, so please try and keep your warmth for your fellow man out of the workplace.
good luck with your search for work.

as i read off my wii-news article the other day over the chief director of shell that recently got outed as being gay ( and collapsed):
Business and Sport remain the last bastion's of Homophobia in the modern world.
you're not supposed to discriminate on any grounds, creed, age, gender, sexuality, religion, but people always do. and it's very difficult to prove.

They're starting to limit the discrimination in most places. It's not really allowed, but there are still some tendencies of employers to hold back on their ideas. Clothing companies such as GAP are waay open.

Will they (the company) know you are gay when you apply for job? I don't think they would know unless you tell them. So, not to worry. Just worry how to write a good resume.

Providing you wouldnt be wearing a T shirt stating the fact, you wouldnt and shouldnt be cast aside or prefered. I would think you would be judged on experience, personality and education.
