A lot of the technology still hasn't been refined enough to be efficient enough for full production use. Most people do drive long distances and most the the electrical technology for vehicle can't last the distances that most people drive. Some of the alternate fuels are still as risky CNG, Hydrogen, fuel cell. The technology is still too expensive, and not quiet as efficient for large volume production. Most of these technologies will probably be ready in about 10 years or more. Besides, all electric cars are far heavier than gasoline and diesel engines. The batteries used would create more hazardous environment when they are not longer usable. The people that converted their cars to be all electric spent about as much as it cost to buy a car to convert them. Eventually those lead acid batteries do die, and they'll have to be disposed of.

Why should it be up to government to put up money for research?

When there is a market for different means of powering automobiles, then plenty of companies will dump money into research to come up with the best product. There won't be a market until the general population demands one.

It costs more to produce the alternate sources. It doesn't mean we should not try though. All of those who say Bush will lose profits...Bush is pushing for fuel production from corn and sugar cane......where do you get such idiotic information?

Because Bush and Cheney profit too much from its use.

And i dont think we have the technology, but a lot more could be invested into the research for an alternative source, but like i said Bush doesnt want to do that because is wallet would end up a little thinner.
