My husband and I have an apartment in Hawaii. And, included with that is a huge ant and roach problem. We seem to get ants in our bathroom and roaches in our kitchen no matter how clean we keep the place.

Unfortunately, I've been told that it's "part of life in Hawaii", and I presume it's because noone really cares to take care of the pests. The roaches are about an inch long. The ants are "ghost ants", are very tiny, and supposedly love water (though I rarely see them near any to be honest). We can't keep spraying RAID because by the time we've thoroughly stopped them, we're getting sick from the smell, and exterminators push our wallets a little farther than they can go. What's a good solution for at least deterring ants and roaches using our home as a pit stop between uncaring persons? There are no children to worry about in this instance - just two adults not wanting to feel like animals in a cave.

the trouble with units is even if you call a PCO your not likely to fully get rid of the problem fully as pests travel through wall cavity's ,along plumbing between units
For best results try to get all the tenants to have treated together....most PC company's will give a good discount that way
else wise try mixing borax and caster sugar 50-50 mix .this should help with the ants and the cockies
you can also leave out saucers of beer overnight that should attract and drown some of the cockies
lol

These insects ARE a part of living in Hawaii, but that doesn't mean they have to be let run amok. Sealing the house up will help for starters. Go through the chinks, nooks, crannies, cracks and crevices in both kitchen and bathroom with a tub of silicone sealant, start blocking up all methods of ingress into the house. From there, a little research should be able to give them a proper industrial strength chemical to use against both insect types. Raid is a great product, but if it's too strong you may want to go to extreme ventilation while you use it. Open all the windows and use fans to pump air from these areas out of there as you go to town. Masks won't help of course, but a constant flushing of the air supply will.

Pets can complicate things. Take appropriate safety measures. What will kill roaches will kill amost anything else on earth, so be extremely careful.

I am aware that lizards are allowed to crawl freely, or at least they were when I was young and there, but then that was many, many moons ago. Can't handle roaches tho. That is a health issue. Have you checked with the Public Health Department about that issue?
The problem you may be having is that once you treat your area, the 'pests' may just go thru walls, around pipes, and head over to your neighbors for awhile, only to return later. If that is the case then the whole place needs to be treated by professionals. (I imagine that needs to happen any way from what you are saying) By continued spraying yourself, you are simply exposing yourself to alot of bug spray and accomplishing nothing. (been there & done that) That kind of infestation can only be taken care of with professional strength stuff that you and I can't buy. And you shouldn't have to pay for it if you rent the joint either unless you brought the critters with you.

Spray ant repellent on the outside of your apartment. Along the front door and all around the windows. Also, there are ant traps, similar to roach traps. Keep all sugar type foods tightly sealed, including cereal. If you see a path that the ants are using, spray the path to it's source (or as close as possible). Spray daily for a week. Also talk to the apartment staff. It is there responsibility to keep the infestation to a minimum. There are insecticides that they can use that don't smell (unlike Raid). We have a pest control man spray our house once a month. He sprays my bedroom and I can't smell a thing. I live in Vegas and we're at 100 so I know hot.

First, stop spraying all the chemicals or you'll have a deformed fetus, cancer, or some other mishap. Second, take the garbage out daily, and cover it with a lid. Third, leave NO foodstuffs in the cabinet, on the counter, or anywhere in the open; stuff everything (esp. sugar, cookies, bread, etc.) in the fridge. Make sure you have no leaks in your plumbing; the bugs like to drink! Wash everything with soap and water the minute you are through eating/drinking. As for recyclables, rinse, rinse, rinse out the bottles (ESP. beer bottles) and get them out of y our house ASAP!! Before you do anything, you need to give your house a good cleaning to remove cockroach dander and ant trails. Vacuum, vacuum, vacuum... mop, mop, mop... spray the countertops with pine green or something relatively healthy. Maybe the bugs are a sign that you are not cut out to live in Hawai'i and should move back to the continental U.S.

I had the same problem and bought a large bag of bay leaves which I crumbled and spread along the outside wall of the building. Within a couple of days the ants were gone. It is not poison but they do not like it and go the other direction.
