I've seen that before when you set a video mode for Windows that's outside the range of a monitor... some monitors are friendly and say 'oops, too fast for me' or some such message... some (old ones for sure, some newer ones) just go black. The electronics recognises the signal is too fast for it and just shuts down.
Go into safe mode and re-set the video resolution to something your monitor cn cope with. It may be you set too high a resolution or too high a scan frequency... if in doubt go back to default VGA and work your way up to the highest your monitor can cope with.
If the screen is all black when you're in safe mode... something has failed in your video card or your monitor.

restart the computer.
IF RUNNING WINDOWS......................
keep tapping f8 while its booting.
if you DONT get a black and white text screen, your video card is fried. you need a new one.
but then again it could be your monitor. you'll need to test it on another computer.
if you DO get a b/w screen choose ------- safe mode
load windows -------- click start
then control panel
then system
click the hardware tab on top
click device manager in the middle right
click plus sign on display adapters.
make sure none of the one or two listed have a red x on it
if there is a red x, right click it and choose enable.
If there is no red x check the back of the computer first and remove the cable to the monitor and see if it fits into another plug like the one you pulled it out of.
if not, your vid card is fried and you need a new one(if its on your mother board, I suggest a new motherboard)
or your monitors still dead, test it on another comp.
reinstalling video drivers in safe mode could help, but I think theres a mistake in device manager.

Believe me your monitor just fine. It's just your monitor can't handle the refresh rate of your vga card, or the resolution to big.
There is so much way to restore it, but the simple way is:
1. go to safe mode (follow that guy instruction).
2. after you get inside (i'm sure) go to control panel
3. click "add/remove program" then uninstall your display driver.
4. Restart, and now just get to normal way to boot.
5. Don't forget to install your driver back.
6. Good luck.

Sounds like maybe a bad video driver. Can you get into Safe Mode and see the display? If you can, change the video display to standard VGA and then see if you get a display with Windows. If you can, then locate the proper driver and install it.
