Some people like to use it, others don't. But if you use it, make sure you're adding the right kind. You want to use salt without iodine, so don't use most table salt. Kosher, canning, pickling, rock, or aquarium salt are what you want. You can add up to 1 tablespoon for every 5 gallons of water, but many use less than that.

Here's a link that talks about using salt in a tank and how it can benefit your fish, as well as when it may not be good to add to your tank: http://www.skepticalaquarist.com/docs/health/salt.shtml

Yes, as long as it is a very small amount. To explain why it does not harm the fish, water will allways flow from areas of high salt concentration to areas of low concentration. When a small amount of salt is added there is no interferance with the flow of water, because the fish still has a higher amount of salt than the surrounding water. This means that the water will not flow out of the fish and thus the small amount of salt added will not result in discomfort and dehydration.

Also if you still do not think salt is a good thing, then you can listen to experience, as I currently have salt in my tropical tank (containing tetra's and loach's), and have found that it does not cause discomfort to my fish, but instead, seems to help guard them against infection, parasites and all sorts of nasty "life-threataning" things.

Also you musn't use ordinary "table" or iodised salt as this is potentially harmfull to your fish. Instead use aquarium salt from your local pet shop, or (as I do) use rock salt from the supermarket (It's way cheaper and works just as well)

I hope this helps :D

Hi,
A little pinch of rocksalt is good for them, but don't go overboard, as they are not saltwater fish.
Take care.
