I have upgraded my ram to 1 gb but still my pc is running slow.I have an intel cpu which runs at 1.7ghz. I have seen that there are newer and more powerul cpus out there and was wondering whether I need to upgrade to a better one. Would this effectively make my pc run alot faster? Will I need to replace my exsisting motherboard to do this?

Might have to upgrade the motherboard, depends on what your motherboard supports. Overall though, if you upgraded to 1gb of ram and noticed no difference, you may have a spyware infection. Best to get some anti-spyware tools, such as Spybot Seach & Destroy, Ad-Aware, Etc.., and run them.

Changing a CPU is probably one of the hardest things to do, phisicly changing it is easy, you just unclip the fan, unclip the leaver and up just lift it out. pop a new one it that has the same pin configuration and replace the fan. the hard part in configuring it, this may sound easy but if the wrong voltage ect is fead to the cup then it's BY BY CPU and you have waisted all you money. it is far better to buy a motherboard with the cpu and fan already fitted to the motherboard as this will already be configured. You will need to check things out very very carefully and different boards need different power supply units, so it's really not to wise to just put a new motherboard and cpu in unless you know exactly what you are doing, it's not just aquestion of simply changinmg over a motherboard, like changing a cd -rom or something like that.
this may help in speeding up your XP system.

1, MY COMPUTER / WINDOWS /LOOK FOR A FOLDER LABLED CURSORS,
OPEN THIS FOLDER AND YOU WILL SEE LOTS OF ICONS.
DELETE THE FIRST TWO ROWS.THE NEXT ROW WILL HAVE A BLACK ARROW
ON THE RIGHT HAND END AND ONE ABOUT HALF WAY ALONG
THIS WILL TELL YOU THAT YOU HAVE THE CORRECT LINE OF ICONS,
THIS LINE YOU KEEP, DELETE ALL THE OTHER ICONS BELOW THIS LINE OF ICONS
SO YOU ARE LEFT WITH JUST ONE ROW OF ICON ARROWS.
THAT IS THE FIRST PART COMPLET. COME OUT OF THAT FOLDER.

Slow depends on how ur 'puter is configured.
Review 'start menu' and uncheck the programs not needed to boot the computer. You can always start any prog after bootup. Erase all internet explorer temp files, cookies, hist, and so forth. Run defrag once a month. Disable the animation characteristics of Xp. I have a 1.2ghz w/512mb ram, 64mb video card. All genuine drivers for the install. This 'puter runs really well. I have WinDefender,Avg7.5, and Zonelabs firewall. Also enlarge your virtual memory file size to minimaly 2.5 times the amount of your RAM to maximum amount of space allowed by the computer.

Most computer users have been trained that if you want more speed for your computer, then add more memory. Well, this is true, in certain circumstances. But for most of the times, it really is just bad files in your registry files. Corrupted or missing registry files can make your computer too slow.
The registry is a main part of your computer's Operating System. With time, as you use Windows and install and uninstall programs, your registry will get congested and full of errors. So your computer could slow down. So, if you can clean it up this problem can be solved.Sometimes you can speed computer up by 300%. To clean up registry,You can download a software called regsitry cleaner---Clean registry, remnant, corrupt files and temp files,history,cookies,etc.. This site:

lists top 5 registry cleaner, you can download and scan for free.
Good luck!

For internet and office apps, that should not be slow. Your PC is probably slow in 3D apps like games. You might still be using integrated graphics w/c is slow for 3D. Perhaps you just need a good graphics card.
