My car has started screeching when I press the gas pedal. The screech stops when I take my foot off the gas. It's not a loud screech at this point, but if something is wrong I want to take care of it before it causes more problems that will cost even more to repair. Whatever the problem is, I'd like to get it fixed now as I'm going on a long road trip for Memorial Day weekend (6 hours each way).

Might this be a fan belt issue? And if so, will it be expensive to have repaired?

When was the last time you changed your belt? Oh well that's probably your belts since you hear screeching when you rev you engine. Its a good thing your planning to replace it immediately. Its really a huge hassle having a damaged belt

Take a look at the belt. Is it cracked on the inside surface? Can you move the belt more than an inch or two? If so, take it to a garage and have them install a new belt. It won't be too expensive and you can be assured it will get you where you are going. Don't chance it....you don't want to be stuck along side some road with a broken belt. Good luck.

Fan belts grip on the sides of the V and if its slipping you may need to not only replace the belt but also the pulley . Have a look at the pulley you should be able to see if the belt is riding right down in the grooves if so get it repaired it wont cost too much.~~

Your fan belt IS loose. When u step on throttle the engine spins faster than the fan pulleys can keep up....so the belt slips and screeches. Have it looked at to be tightened or just replace it and have proper tension applied to it.
Oh not expensive repair.

I'd definitely get it checked out before you leave on your trip,
yup sounds to me like belt troubles. Pretty cheap fix. BUT just in case take an old pair of stockings with you on your drive, better to use that then sit on the side of the road for hours! *wink*
