Well first of all because it is a republic. Then the matter of the Name. Geeks have always called themselves Hellenes because mythological we are all children of a mythical ruler called Hellenos. The word Greek comes from another mythical ruler of the mainland called Graikos. Greece is the name of Greeks in the west. In the east however we are known as Unan (pronounced "you nan") which is derived from early antiquity from the Ionian Hellenes.

Because the real name of the habitants of Greece for thousands of years was "Ellines" = " Hellines". The name "graikoi" from where the name "greece" comes from was imposed during the Christianity years.

When Christianity took over, 2007 years ago, the old religion (12 Gods) and the new one (Christianism) came in conflict. The word "Hellin" "Eλλην" took a religional meaning and was considered as synonymous to "pagan".

Therefore Christian authorities decided that "Hellenes" (Ελληνες) would be renominated "Romans" and "Graikoi" from this period and afterwards. In this way they considered that the old pagan religion (12 Gods) would disappear.

Graikos was the name of a tribe derriving from Boetia (a Greek region) who migrated to Italy in the 8th century BC, and it is by that name the Hellenes were known in the West. According to Pausanias, Graea (the city) was the name of the ancient city of Tanagra (which is so called till our days).

Later on, when Greece became again an independent state (after the 400 years that the country was occupied by the Ottoman empire) regained its original name which was "Hellas" and its habitants "Hellines".

Hellenic and Greek is the same. Greece is called Hellas in greek. Graikos and Hellen are both ancient legendary ancestors of the Greek people, and the two names come from those.
