Agreed, it is annoying. And nobody knows why it's there. There are a few theories I've heard, such as:
-helps stop friction burns, since it's on places (underarms and between the legs) which have a lot of movement
-helps catch sweat, since it's on places that sweat a lot, and cools you down because the moisture stays there
-it's a left over from when we evolved from monkeys

Well, I agree with everyone that says it is a bit of a shield from "outside forces" hehehe, but also it collects "scents" that are stimulating to men as well as visual stimulation. Stand in front of a mirror nude and squint your eyes. What stands out most to you?

Because there is an opening to your body. Long long time ago before clothing,hair was longer in all areas. sitting down, using bathroom ect...the long hair would protect the opening, much like nose hairs,eyelashes..ect..
