Spiritual people tend to undervalue money, so they do not make enough effort to be wealthy.
Wealthy people are intoxicated by their wealth and the apparent power it gives... they tend to undervalue the need of spirituality in life. However, excessively wealthy people do finally turn to spirituality because they untimately realise how hollow and shallow is the shean and shine of wealth...... a time comes when they suddenly find all their wealth is unable to give them what they really want.
Insightful question.... STAR!!

I do not believe that this is a fair assumption. Perhaps "Why are wealthy people not as spiritual as the very poor?".
It is a matter of need as I also believe miracles are. Our spirituality is at its most sensitive when we are in desperate need. Have you ever heard of the athiest hanging onto a breaking branch whilst suspended over a 200m drop. All of a sudden he is no longer an athiest as the ONLY thing left is to look for something higher than our abilities.
Many wealthy people appreciate spirituality more than many because they know what it took to become wealthy and all that they have helped along the way.
The impression of wealthy people not being spiritual is because of need. There is little need for wealthy people as all they have to do is pay for it but it is when it comes to something that they can't buy that they become spiritual.

Wealth goes with power. And as for power, the more you possess the less you start caring about others. There are of course religious and spiritual rich people as well, but what comes from within is not pure anymore. Dont forget the teachings of Jesus and the way he lived. He said to give and share, since that is the only way to reach happiness, when the spiritual part of yours remains loyal to the human code of honor.
Treat others, as you want to be treated.
Criticize only after self-criticism.
Live and let live.
As you notice these are not the characteristics of the wealthy people, rather of the poor but caring!!!

I am afraid the statement is confusing. Spirituality and money are not co related. They are two different things. Being wealthy is one state and being spiritual is another. It is the bend of one's mind which turns him to spiritualism. There are many factors due to which a person is attracted to spiritualism. It is the understanding of the mind which at a particular stage makes him to turn to spirituality. spirituality is a positive way of thinking. I think when there are many adversities coming in the way a man turns to spirituality to pacify his disturbed mind. He gets solace by this thinking and then succeeds in his endurance. Spirituality helps mankind in leaving a peaceful life. Hence a person is rich or poor spirituality helps him to be at peace.

Being religious and being spiritual are two different things. One may be very religious without being spiritual.
Hence truly spiritual persons live on the principle of "providential dependence". Their dependence is on God alone and not on wealth.
Perhaps it is easier for the materially poor to develop the attitude of providential dependence.,in view of their situation in life.
Only the wise know that mere possession of wealth does not give them fullfilment in life or happiness.Such "wise" people may be wealthy or poor according to worldly standards.
Hence a wealthy man who depends on God for everything and counts his wealth as nothing is entering the portals of spirituality.Whereas a materially poor man who is hankering after wealth and power even though he be religious is not spiritual.Hence if the spirit of renunciation is cultivated by the wealthy or poor leads to spiritual awakening.
It is extremely difficult for wealthy and powerful people to renounce and take the truly spiritual path, though there are innumerable exceptions.

In my opinion... those without wealth are more likely to be sucked into religion for a few reasons. 1- They are lowest in the social hierachy here on earth and look to "heaven" as a means to finally becoming "wealthy". 2- They may feel that the society they live in is unjust, making them poor. God is supposedly the untimate judge and they feel that they will finally be redeemed by him. 3- They have less money and thus less access to education. If you can't undertand scientific explanations of the universe then spiritual explanations often become the substitute. A college education is hard to come by but Bibles are everywhere (and so are churches). 4- Like I said, religion is everywhere and it is often a cheap form of entertainment. Church daycares are less expensive, youth groups are usually free give their kids something to do, going to church allows them to meet people and make friends, ect...
Weathly people do not face these kinds of hardships and thus are less likely to easily accept religion. But when they do, they are more likely to do it for purely spiritual reasons.
I do not think you are making a huge generalization here. It is fairly obvious that poorer people tend to be more religious. Yes, televangelists are rich, but do you really think they are truly religious? Just look at Ted Haggard- a gay meth addict! I would say he is definitely only in his business for the money and not the salvation!

Well I have seen different. My father-in-law is both wealthy and spiritual (in the sense he spends a lot of his time and energy in religious activities while being quite lucky and intuitive in the Share market). I am not talking of exceptions. There are many more rich people I know who spend most of their leisure in religious places.
In India I believe true spiritualism is in the hands of middle-income-group. The poor are too busy earning bread and shelter while most rich are too busy making more money or protecting their interests.

$$$ tend not to = to spiritual
Being spiritual = to being able to live life with what life give you irreardless whether you are rich or poor. It is about living a good life based on values/principal. Normally $$$ is not one of this values / principal.
As a freelancer I left a stable $$$ to venture into the unknown.
Intially I started to think of $$$ first than the passion of my work... it was tough end up chasing after $$$ and not focusing on passion. Later I place Passion first and $$ second. Guess what $$$ started to come in.
Spritiual or $$$?
