This is a question that came up with my friends. We're from North Dakota so there's very little bias here since we don't have football nearby. Remember...not fastest...not strongest...not most athletic...but toughest...lays the nastiest blocks, gets the hardest 5 or 10 extra yards after catch before falling. Is willing to impale himself across the middle to catch a ball for his team. 3 names came up most often out of the 15 or so guys...
Steve Smith (Carolina)
Donald Driver (Green Bay)
Hines Ward (Pittsburgh)
...a good case can be made for any of them. Steve Smith is by far the most athletic and strongest. Driver is virtually impossible to knock the ball loose from in midair, he can get hit by a 747 and hang on. And as far as Hines, I've seen that man knock literally knock linebackers unconcious, and take 6 extra hits to fight for a half-extra yards at midfield!
They're three tough bastards..but whose the gosh-damn toughest grittiest receiver in the league?

Well two of the best blockers in the league are Keyshawn and Hines Ward, Hines also happens to be a top 10 receiver.
But my pick for toughest is a player not talked about as much anymore Javon Walker, he blocks like crazy, goes over the middle for the short catches and goes deep and plays jump ball (usually getting hit lit up).
On the list i definetly prefer Hines first, Smith second (thought gets injured alot), and third Driver.

Hines Ward made a name for himself as being the best blocking WR. Then he showed he was also great in the passing game. The guy takes a beating and will do whatever the team needs him to do to win.
Steve Smith has absolutely no regard for his own body when he plays. He acts like he's the size of a TE but he is one of the smaller NFL wide receivers. This is probably why he's injured all the time but he's golden when he's healthy. I'm a big Hines Ward fan but I still think Steve Smith is a little tougher.

Hines Ward..... Steve Smith and Donald Driver are good but not great like Hines Ward he just does that little bit extra when it comes to blocking, getting those 5 or 10 extra yards and going in the middle of the feild to put his body on the line for his team

If I was going to pick one of these 3 WR's I would say Ward. He is not the biggest player but he is willing to block anyone on the field and he does it well. He also fights for the extra yard whenever he gets the ball. But I don't think the toughest reciever is in this group. I would like to throw another name out there...Anquan Boldin. Have you ever seen this guy play? Wow. He will catch a ball over the middle and look for the person he wants to hit. I remember a play last year where he caught the ball at the 15 yard line and was creamed by 3 defenders. He didn't go down, he not only stayed up but he ended up taking the ball in the endzone. Watch a Cardinals game and tell me this guy isn't special.

I live in Ohio but I was born in Grand Forks! Didn't think anyone else lived in the state..lol
I'm trying to come up with a name other that Hines Ward because as a Brown's fan I see him twice a year and I admire him as a true football player which is the best way to describe him. He gives up his body for the team more than any WR in the league. I think Keyshaun is a close second.

Hines Ward is tough as hell and he can block better than some offensive linemen in the NFL. The same can be said for Laverneaus Coles, who because he doesnt "Lean Wit Rock Wit It" after every TD or dance on another team's logo is very unspoken of. Donald Driver is another guy who I love watching that is tough as hell. And plus he's my boy because he came out of the SWAC (the same conference that produced Jerry Rice and Walter Payton for those who dont know).
In the future, I see Marques Colston becoming that kind of receiver. Notice I said BECOMING, because he's not quite there yet, but he has all the physical tools to do so.
As far as Terrible Owens, he's about as tough as a cheap paper towel soaked in water.

Larry Fitzgerald. Perfect combination of speed and possession receiver, that can run any route. Close 2nd to Andre Johnson for the same criteria as above. Lots of votes for Calvin Johnson. If the question were best deep threat than I'd agree, but not best wide receiver.

Hines Ward no doubt. He was voted best blocking receiver by NFL players last year and came in second in dirtiest player voting behind Rodney Harrison.
