Its plain probability. There are a billion billion galaxies out there. Even with a 1% probability of life outside that makes thousands of habitable planets.

People believe in a lot of different "imaginary" things - God, aliens, the Easter Bunny, dragons, vampires, an "honest" politician ;););) ... the list goes on.

I think that is important to believe in SOMETHING - even if not spiritually, then simply for the sake of your own imagination or creativity. When was the last time that a spreadsheet ever inspired someone to create art???

As for aliens specifically, it does indeed seem reasonable that there are aliens out there in the universe someplace (btw - good answer, Simon H) - as for visiting Earth, that is more a matter of belief.

After all - if a man can leave the world behind for three days, and then return (as is the belief of Jesus's death and rebirth) - then why can't others visit us from a place so far, far away?

I am not saying that any of these do or do not exist (aliens, god/heaven, etc) - but until there are actual hard facts, it is all a matter of faith..
(say... either a saucer lands in front of the UN building, or Buddha appears in person to perform miracles on CNN).

Because there's no valid reason not to..
In the vast expanse of the universe, don't you think it's being a bit too egotistical to assume that our's is the only planet where life may have originated? While there's no proof that extra-terrestrials have visited our planet, there's no evidence on the contrary either:

there's no evidence of extra advantageous terrestrials. particular there is evidence that there may well be liveable places someplace else interior the galaxy yet no evidence of there easily being any. and because we can't bypass to those so referred to as liveable places, we don't probably understand in the event that they're liveable. in spite of each thing, your beneficial scientists theory that Venus become liveable interior the 50s. If there have been extraterrestrial beings notwithstanding, i'm particular they'd would desire to settle for Jesus as God and Savior.

Most of the answers are pointing in the same direction, without realising theres an (hypothetical) equation figuring out the chance that ETs exist; its the Drake equation:
N = R* × fp × ne × fl × fi × fc × L (Follow the link!)
Even with the most conservative estimates (cos thats all we can do with these values), this formula predicts that there are huge amounts of ET life out there.
Now if only they would find us...

There are approx 100 billion stars in our galaxy. If only 1%of those had a compatible star and compatible planets similiar to earth, there would be 1 billion planets that could support life. If 1% of those had intelligent life, there would be 10 million planets with intelligent life. If only 1% of those had reached the capability to travel through space, there would be 100,000 space-faring civilizations in the galaxy.

The odds are in favor of e.t.'s

Also, it is kinda silly to believe that with billions of galaxies and each has billions of stars, that we are the only planet with life. Kinda a waste of space.

As far as any of them contacting Earth, as I said, there is a lot of space, the odds are that none of them have been here. In addition, even if they had, it would be like us watching a group of monkeys in Africa, watch, but not interfer.

The stars are too far to touch. Then comes the planets. Going further are different galaxies, black holes, solar systems.
Are we so egotistical that we, on earth, are the only planet out there capable of life?

Because they want to believe aliens must exist but the chances of us making contact with them or them with us is almost non existent.

REALISTICLY SPEAKING HOW COULD ONE WITH AN OPEN MIND NOT BELIEVE IN ET'S AND NO IM NOT TALKING PHONE HOME ET'S WHEN ONE THINKS OF HOW VAST SPACE IS THINK OF THE POSSIBILITIES IF I MAY BE SO BLUNT AT ONE TIME DURING OUR EVOLUTION WHOS TO SAY WE WERE'NT ALIEN TO THINGS EXISTING BEFORE HOMOSAPIENS ARRIVED

People believe in aliens for the reason that they lack faith or they need to get closer to God no offense to anyone.
