Okay, I'm gonna go out on a limb here and assume you're talking about literature. Here's three you should consider.

"The Catcher in the Rye" by J.D. Salinger. Holden tells his tale after being expelled from a fancy prep school. Maybe the best coming-of-age novel.

"To Kill a Mockingbird" by Harper Lee. Yeah, the story's told by a girl, but it's a powerful social commentary on racism. I won't give it away, but the mockingbird is symbolic of injustice.

"Lord of the Flies" by William Golding. A group of boys are the only survivors of an island plane crash. If is behavior tied to society, how would we act if there wasn't one? Full of action and easy to read.

I agree with the suggestions of "Catch-22" by Joseph Heller and "Of Mice and Men" (a novella) by John Steinbeck. "The Grapes of Wrath" is also good, but maybe too long and depressing for you.
