When I turned the key it made a noise similar that of someone turning the key in the ignition of a car that is already running.

Check your battery. If your battery light is showing red and the lights of your car are still turning on then that means your not running your car enough or driving it enough the same thing happened to me. You don't have to drive your car alot but if you run your car three times a week for 30 min then that will charge the battery and give it more power so that your car battery won't lose power which will result in your car not starting. Also make sure that you are not leaving lights on in and outside of the car that will also drain the battery and cause it not to start. Get someone to give your car a jump the next time it doesn't starts because it might be the battery because starters in cars last a little bit longer these days.

There could be two reasons for that. One the starter is going out and did not engage the fly wheel. Or your flywheel is starting to get worn teeth or a bad spot. If it does it again have a technician check it out. He can pull the starter and visually see the teeth on the fly wheel. If they look good then replace the starter. Hope this helps.

a bad starter hopefully
if not it is a bad ring gear which means the engine has to be separated from the trans to replace it

ring gear or flywheel (manual transmission)
flexplate (automatic transmission)
