To keep your snails healthy, feed them on a regular base with vegetables (lettuce, cucumber, small pieces of carrots, green beans and celery), weeds from the garden and ordinary fish food.

Apple snails will live about 18 to 24 months when kept in water at a temperature of 82 degrees F. At a temperature of 65 degrees F snails have a life span of at least 3 years perhaps as long as 10 years.

Generally, the cooler the water the longer the Snails will live. But these Snails do not live well at a temperature below about 65 degrees F.

They eat mostly vegetation, that's why they're used to control algae in aquariums. Unfortunately, they don't eat all types of algae, and they may also eat your plants. There are more than one species that goes by the name "apple snail", but for most purposes, they can be treated the same. If you don't have a lot of algae, you can give them romaine, squash, cucumbers, algae tablets and other foods.

The life span is somewhat dependent on the water temperature - even though they're most often used in tropical fish tanks, they live longer in cooler water. They also need to have calcium to build their shells, and clean water - many people don't stop to consider that their apple snail adds to the bioload (uses oxygen and creates wastes) just like the fish. And apple snails can get several inches across, so in a small tank, they may make it necessary to do more frequent water changes. A snail with good care should live at least 5-10 years in cool water, but may only live for a year in warm.

Here are two links where you can read more about them:

It is now illegal to obtain apple snails through the pet trade. The law went into effect on Jan 01, 2007. They are one of the invasive species. The same is true for Rams-horn snails.
Enjoy the one you have while it lives. They like a temperature of about 80.

Feed them quality rat diet (such as Regal Rat). You do not want to ''fatten'' your rats, as that's unhealthy. Rats do not get bigger based on what they're fed. They stay a basic size. Males are bigger than females, so if you want a larger rat, get a male. My male weighs around 1lb, while my females are closer to 1/2 lb.

lifespan - up to 30 years (apparently) but the average is 4 IF they are looked after correctly... however... they are rarely looked after correctly.

they will eat algae, other smaller snail and their eggs... you can also get pellets from the petshop to feed them.... you can also feed them vegges like cucumber.

they are really nice and can get quite big - heres a website with more info -
