Well, in my opinion, Shawshank Redemption is the ultimate affirmation of hope. So, it's not that sad.

In a way, Green Mile is much more somber because Paul's character will outlive everyone he loves. That, to me, is horrible.

Cheers!

Shawshank redemption is my favorite movie, I have literally seen it like a millon times.. but the Green Mile is so sad, every five minutes I was crying..... The way the movie was played out, and the actors oh, gosh it was so moving.. Heck, im getting all weepy now....But It was so sad, the part where they finally showed the guy the movie, with fred astaire when he was singing Heaven, Im in heaven.. Gosh, i got all choked up.. that is one of my favorite songs.. so for them to incorporate that song in the movie, it was genius.. but I bawled like a baby.. now that is a tough feat for me, i dont cry normally... But that movie, Gosh.. it was an great movie.. Shawshank redemption is like the best movie ever, it is happier than green mile because they see each other on the beach, they are happy... its a great ending, anyways Ciao..

Green Mile 4 sure. The entire film was riddled with sadness...the murder of the girls, the terrible burden John Coffee had from his gift, and how it got passed on to Paul.

The deaths of Arlen Bitterbuck the indian, and Del the Cajun.

The cruelty of Wild Bill, and also Percy, and how they both had their come-uppances.

The sad situation of Warden Moores and his wife, and their ultimate salvation.

And finally the bittersweet end of John Coffee, and the legacy he passed on that haunted Paul Edgecombe by outliving all the people he loved in his life.

Compared to Shawshank (an equally great if not overall better movie), the death of one, even sympathetic prisoner was really nothing.

Well, at least Shawshank Redemption has a happy ending for the main characters. So I guess Green Mile is the sadder pic of the two.

For my money, they're both really good flicks, but Shawshank is a little better overall.

Shawshank : They got even beautifully. But Green Mile had no happy revenge. The electrocution was a disaster , he sizzled for a long time. He was innocent and Tom Hanks had to live forever (and very tired of it) I'll go you one better ! Try "On The Beach".Ava Gardner, Fred Astaire,Ronnie McDowell andGreg. Peck. Nuclear Explosion .Everyone dies. Lots of fear because it can so easily happen, now and years ago. The one surviving submarine ran 'til it's end.

No, sorry, have to go with Green Mile, as the big, retarded black guy was not guilty but convicted and the Tom Hank's guard characther lived a long life.

In Shawshank Redemptions, all the of inmates were guilty except Tim Robbin's charactor, and he was able to successfully excape in the end.

I think the Green Mile. It made me cry.
Shawshank had a happy ending , they cleaned the prison up and made it to freedom, with cash!
The old guy dying was sad, though.

I think the wrongful imprisonment and his wife betraying him is more sad than the hanging. You have to understand that the man just didn't know how to LIVE without walls.

But then I think about the little girls and the deathrow inmates in GM and I really can't choose. They are both outstanding films though!
