1. Hitler offered them hope by feeding on their emotions concerning the denouncement of the Treaty of Versailles
2. They believed that Hitler could provide for them a new beginning based on a new nationalistic spirit which promoted the good things about German culture, workmanship, and pride.
3. With the coming of the Great Depression, the inability to pay off war debts the inability of the Weimar Republic to cope with the problems, the Nazi party seemed to provide real answers to the needs of the people.
4. Hitler fed off the people their disregard for the Jews. They were blamed in Germany and in other parts of Europe for the economic problems that caused Germany' s defeat in WW1.
5. Hitler was a great orator that mesmerized the people in a frenzied manner that could only be described as hypnotic attractiveness to his every word.

They were devastated after WWI with the reparations they had to pay to the victors, high unemployment, devalued money, all social systems failing, etc. and etc.

Plus they were accustomed to being ruled by an individual, rather than having a democratic form of government, so when someone came along who promised to fix it all and be in charge, they were ready and eager for that.

Don't we all want someone to kiss it and make it better? And we don't look to see if the lips doing the kissing are hiding fangs.

To me, the more remarkable thing is that they continued to support him after all reason said that they should not; however, I have seen many documentaries about this and can understand it a little better. From inside Germany, with the government controlled media, many citizens really thought that Poland had been the aggressor, which was of course ridiculous, and once the atrocities intensified in the country, (which most were aware of regardless of what they said later) people who didn't like it didn't speak out because it was not a free country and they saw what happened to people who objected. Not an excuse, but understandable. I don't know what I would have done.

Hitler used terror at a desperate time when depression had turned even worse. He also promised a third Empire as great as the last two Roman "Reichs", the last of which was a germanic rieich that had ended in the 1800's. Promises of a great nation as well as preying on mass hysteria of antisematism to whip a nation into a frenzy allowing him to place himself in power and invade long time enemies.

they accepted hitler because they wanted an independent leader who could pull them out of a depression. and he did. he brought them out of a depression exactly as he told them he would. i'm not defending hitler but you have to admit that he did completely turn around germany's economy.

Germany was in depression (economically and literally). They were weak from world war 1 and also humiliated by the Allies.

Hitler was mostly successful in restoring the confidence and nationalism of the German people. his policies and actions taken such as obtaining the territories of the Ruhr, Czechoslovakia and the union with Austria helped to improve his image of making Germany strong.

He also boosted German economy by increasing the size of the army (which provided jobs and helped increase industrial output.)

Lastly his strong stance against the Allies (whom the German people distrust) helped too.

Because they were in a deep economic depression and desperate for a leader that would bring them back into economic stability. When you're starving, even insanity sounds pleasing as long as it puts food on your plate and money in your pocket.

they didn't know what he was. he made wonderful promises for their economy, fulfilled a lot of them, and won them over with one of the most persuasive speaking abilities ever known. he sucked them in without them realizing exactly what was going on until he had full power, and then once they figured it out, he used the gestapo and hitler youth to keep it that way.
