Sex determination is banned here in India. Is it allowed in other countries??

The rate of female infanticide is high in rural India - families abort the female child considering her as a burden on the resources of the family rather than a bread-winner. However, this is a state only in families below the poverty line and generally in rural areas.
In urban India, people are open and willing to accept the girl child, and most families nowadays even prefer having girls and find themselves in a better position with them.

Sex determination was hence banned in India to maintain the male-female ratio in the country. However, on a personal note, I think the rural illiterate population can kill the girl child even after birth if they really don't want her - and its better for the girl not to come into this world rather than to come to a family who thinks so little about her.

Sex determination is a helpful aid for people like me who are in India but are educated and belong to modern families - it would really help to know for multiple reasons what my child is going to be, however, due to the ban - it is alright even if its a surprise.

A point to note however is, there are centers out there who illegally detect the sex of the child even in India - so really, banning is not solving anyone's problems.

It is a localized decision everywhere in Canada except for British Columbia. In BC the entire province has a ban on telling parents the sex, they found that to many baby girls were being aborted amongst the province's high Chinese population. Odd, since there is no restrictions on how many children you can have in Canada.

Everywhere else here it is allowed, though some clinics or hospitals or cities may not allow it, but it is not illegal. Often it is a matter of protecting the establishment from law suit.

As I understand it, it is common place amongst many "westernized" countries.

In the United States you can opt to determine the sex of a baby if you like.

There are a lot of people that like knowing, but there are also a ton of people out here that choose to wait until the baby is born.

May I ask why it's banned in India?

I read that they banned it in India because many parents were aborting female babies. If this is the case I can see from a standpoint why it was baned as I have read a boy child is considered better in India. We can find out the gender of our children if we choose, but most will not terminate the pregnancy if the child is not of the gender we wanted.

There are soon to be pregnancy tests that can tell you the sex of the baby, too. These are already available in the US.

There is no widespread practice of infanticide here; I understand that in both India and China, Female babies are often killed becuase of strict childbirth laws.

The problem is now, in China, there are over 50,000 more males than females, and it's getting worse: it's going to make finding a wife there impossible!

It is allowed in America. Why is it banned in India? Are they afraid of people aborting if it's the "wrong sex"?

Determination... as in finding out if you're having a boy or girl? Or trying to influence the gender? Nothing wrong with finding out...

Religion and politics don't mix. The government shouldn't be doing the church's job. While the government can regulate behavior, it's not the government's function to enforce morality nor can it be because true moral agency comes from the heart. Martin Luther King once said "the law cannot change the heart but it can restrain the heartless" "the law cannot make a man love me but it can keep him from lynching me" The church's function is supposed to be to promote morality, but unfortunately many Christians have fallen for a false and superficial sense of "morality" motivated by fear and think they're going to be in heaven only because they have a set of beliefs. Beliefs must lead to moral conviction and a change of heart (repentance), but these beliefs must not be based on fear or seeking of reward. Fear is like a law, it only regulates behavior, but it cannot convince you that something is right or wrong. If you let fear or ambition to control your heart, then your morals will be compromised and your faith will fail you. Many Christians have been subtly deceived by theological legalism in which they think they're going to save society by bashing people over the head with God's law, thus contradicting their own bible which says we aren't saved by the works of the law. While they may speak of God's saving grace, that's not the message that many are giving to non-believers. Belief merely in God's existence is beside the point and doesn't necessarily lead to moral conviction, but it can be a basis for believing that moral conviction comes from a divine source and that it's revealed to us either in scripture or in nature. Christians are told to share this "revelation" of God in order for others to be likewise have the same convictions. However their "revelation" of God has be distorted by heresies such as the belief in eternal hell torment. According to Romans 2:14-15, God provides the world with moral conviction regardless if they know if God exists or not. While many Christians are preaching a false gospel with a false sense of morality, God apparently can provide moral conviction in spite of them. While it is true that statistically there is more crime among Christians, what statistics don't show is how regularly these Christians pray, study, attend church, and help the community. This goes to show that merely calling yourself Christian isn't good enough, you must actually follow Christ's teachings. The fact that many Christians don't follow Christ's teachings really puts into question if these convicted criminals ever had their hearts convicted of sin. They may be intellectually convinced, but their hearts aren't really changed. They keep allowing fear and/or ambition to control their lives.

In the US you can do sperm sorting to up your odds of a certain sex, and since abortion is legal I suppose you could technically use that as a method of sex determination.
