Not really a formula, more of a process - http://www.jimloy.com/math/day-week.htm

this explains it further

if you look at your computers watch... and add a year... the day will change +1 day for each year and +2 days for each leap year

2006 - 1985 = 21 years

So.... leap years were

2004, 2000, 1996, 1992, and 1988 were leap years.

21 + 5 = 26 day shift

April 15, 2006 is Saturday
April 15, 1985 is Monday

So 26 / 7 = 3 with a remainder of 5

5 days before Saturday is Monday.

There is a formula, or algorithm. Because of the different number of days in a month, and leap years, it is pretty complicated. Essentially you need to convert the date to a serial number and divide by 7, saving the remainder.

Excel has a function which will do this for you.
