Norman Borlaug, at the time he won his Nobel Prize, was estimated to have saved A BILLION (yes, billion with a B, as in a thousand million) lives (no one else can even come close to claiming this) with his work in genetically modifying food so that it could thrive in harsh climates and feed a whole hell of a lot of starving people.
