What kind of employment are you looking for? If it's something in the medical field, then you should check out websites like nursefinder (I think that's the name). I know NM is recruiting heavily for dentists, nurses, teachers, but I strongly recommend AGAINST the state. It ranks at the bottom or almost the bottom in everything except things like crime where it's near the top. Very poor wages, extremely high cost of living, abysmal school districts.
If you're looking for a technical job, try the Research Triangle of NC--Raleigh, Durham area. Very nice area, but it's starting to get expensive I understand. Knoxville TN rates highly. Virginia is a great state to live in. Higher education in CA is good, but they're housing is out of sight.
I read recently that Coralville IA is the best place to live in the country. It's within commuting distance of Des Moines. Excellent schools, very reasonable housing, good community/family values.
You have to think about what else is important to you--shopping, for instance. Having lived in several different places I can tell you that does have an impact on your home life. You want reasonable access to restaurants, grocery stores, dept. stores, etc. If you choose a more rural setting, it should be a short drive to these places. Trust me on this, I live in a moderately sized city and there's nothing here because the city fathers won't allow anything to be built that's not tourist-related. I have to travel at least 1 hr. each way to find decent stores for clothing, household goods (like linens), things for the kids (toys). I've given up and do most of my shopping from catalogs or travel more than I did to other cities and buy there. I'd like to support local business, but I need basics more than I need artwork.
You do want to consider the cultural side of your family life--museums, art galleries, a zoo or wildlike area. Is there recreation for the family--parks, lakes, theme parks or water parks, bowling alley, golf course, skiing, whatever your family may be interested in.
Consider the weather! Each part of the country has its attractions and drawbacks so you need to decide if month after month of snowfall is for you. Can you handle rain all the time?
One final note--check each state's income tax. For instance, TN and NH don't have a state income tax, but you may find their fees on other things are higher. TN charges a luxury tax in the grocery store on things like soda and chips. NM recently removed sales tax on food items but not on cleaning supplies or paper goods. I think they stopped charging tax on prescriptions.
