Why double standards exist is irrelevant.
Who is responsible for double standards is irrelevant.
The point is that they exist and must be fought.

2fine4u wrote: "Actually, if there is a double standard, I think that it is not even close to the double standards that many other minorities have faced time and time again."
----This is irrelevant in my opinion. As I've said, what matters is that double standards do indeed exist. It doesn't matter who faces more unfairness. We should all stand together to fight all forms of prejudice.

"I have seen some whites say that the existance of the NAACP, BET, HBCU, and affirmative action is a double standard. Yet, I believe that you cannot complain of a double standard if you have not attempted to have similiar things for yourself. If you are just sitting back and complaining then you have made no strides, and you are just a whiner."
----To me, believing this is just like believing that people shouldn't complain about blatant discrimination if they haven't attempted to do anything about it. I don't approve of affirmative action and such, but it isn't because I want anything for white people or anything else. It's because I believe that organizations, institutions, etc..., which benefit any particular races, or other groups, fuels the fallacy that certain groups are better, or more deserving, than others. Seperate is not equal, and there should be no consideration given whatsoever which is based upon race, gender, culture, etc...

"The amazing thing is that, I see women on here complain about how unfair affirmative action is. Affirmative action does just as much to benefit women as minorities. Affirmative action was put in place to "affirm" equal opportunity."
----That's the problem.... In my opinion, it doesn't "affirm" equal opportunity. It perpetuates the idea that race, gender, etc..., matter. I am a woman, and I don't want to benefit from affirmative action because I don't want my gender to be a consideration.

"White america did create the double standard. They pushed for seperate but equal. The only problem with that, was it was never equal."
----You are right. But now what we are dealing with is a "mess load" of double standards. And no one particular race is responsible for all of them as a whole. Who is responsible for most of them? Not important. Who suffers the most as a result? Not important. What is important is that we stand together as human beings and fight them.

"One more thing, I think the reason that some complain of a double standard is because they cannot do all they want to do. I see people whining that they cannot use the "n" word and other black people use it. I refrain from using that word, but common sense would tell them that it is inappropiate. I have heard someone call thier husband a stupid a**hole. Yet, I have the sense to know that I cannot go around calling people's husbands that name."
----I've heard others make that same point. In my mind the two cannot be compared, because we're talking about a word that, regardless of history, carries several different meanings depending upon the intension of the person/people using it. Of course I would become angry if someone called my husband a stupid a*s hole. The reason being because, in all likelihood, the person's intension would be negative. However, I wouldn't necessarily get mad if someone called me a b*tch, whether male or female, because that word has evolved in a similar manner as the "n-word"- meaning that the speaker's intension may not be negative.... It could be be used as a term of endearment or any other of several uses which is usually indicated by tone of voice and the context in which it's used. I try to refrain from using both words, but the fact of the matter is that they are not owned by anyone and everyone has as much right to speak them. I'm not suggesting that people should use them to insult, but we all have a right to simply speak the words.

"If I see something that is unfair, I stand up against it. If you see something that is unfair in your eyes and you just whine about it, you cannot complain when it continues."
----Again, believing this, in my opinion, is the same as believing that people shouldn't complain about blatant discrimination if they haven't attempted to do anything about it.

Bionic wrote:"Yes, Africans sold other Africans into slavery, but the international slave trade was not the work or idea of Africans."
----I love it when I finally hear people stating facts. Thank you! Yes, Africans sold other Africans into slavery. But another thing to remember is that African chiefs were manipulated and lied to. They were led to believe that they were profiting from their people going to a good place where they would live a nice life. In many cases, they were led to believe that their people would simply be earning their passage to, and right to live in, a better world. Also, not all African slaves found themselves enslaved due to being sold. There were several "slave raids". Another thing to remember- Africans and Europeans weren't the only people responsible for the enslavement of Africans. Arabs dominated the slave trade before Euopeans entered into it. Likewise, Europeans bought and sold other Europeans. Many of the first whites to come to America arrived as slaves and indentured servants.

"Is it right to holds whites of today responsible for slavery? No! Is it right to hold them accountable? Yes!"
----Sorry, but I am in no way answerable, liable, responsible, or however you want to word it, for the enslavement of black people in America, and neither is anyone else who is alive today.

"My point is, our government has never taken steps to bring us together which is why we call ourselves white, black(african american, latino(hispanic), asian(korean, japanease, chinease, etc), arab(iranian, iraqi, kuwaiti, indian, etc) instead of just calling ourselves American, period!"
----I agree. But we have to take responsibility for this as well. We have to start coming together as a unified body of human beings despite the government.

Actually, if there is a double standard, I think that it is not even close to the double standards that many other minorities have faced time and time again.

I have seen some whites say that the existance of the NAACP, BET, HBCU, and affirmative action is a double standard. Yet, I believe that you cannot complain of a double standard if you have not attempted to have similiar things for yourself. If you are just sitting back and complaining then you have made no strides, and you are just a whiner.

The amazing thing is that, I see women on here complain about how unfair affirmative action is. Affirmative action does just as much to benefit women as minorities. Affirmative action was put in place to "affirm" equal opportunity.

White america did create the double standard. They pushed for seperate but equal. The only problem with that, was it was never equal.

One more thing, I think the reason that some complain of a double standard is because they cannot do all they want to do. I see people whining that they cannot use the "n" word and other black people use it. I refrain from using that word, but common sense would tell them that it is inappropiate. I have heard someone call thier husband a stupid a**hole. Yet, I have the sense to know that I cannot go around calling people's husbands that name.

If I see something that is unfair, I stand up against it. If you see something that is unfair in your eyes and you just whine about it, you cannot complain when it continues.

Historical truth...

The Varied Definitions Reflect Different Political Interests on the Part of the Dominant Group:
For example, Native Americans are defined by "blood quantum" - a minimum requirement for inclusion in the Native American category - which supported the government's interest in acquiring lands formerly belonging to Native peoples. Specifically, while the 19th century blood quantum rule meant that it was easier for a person of mixed European-Native American ancestry to be considered "white," the offspring (after only a few generations of intermarriage) likely would not have been considered, in the legal sense, Native American at all. Native Americans could have treaty rights to land, but because an individual with one Native American great-grandparent was no longer a "Native American" they lost all legal claim to Native American land.

On the opposite end of the spectrum, the 20th century introduction of the "one-drop rule" made it almost impossible for any person of known black ancestry to be considered "white." In this situation, a child of a European and African union (for generations to come) would be considered Black. This not only supported justification of white-on-black oppression, but provided significant support to whites in the economics of sharecropping, guaranteeing that any such individuals would likely be sharecroppers as well and enhance the white employer's labor force. This system also ensured the ongoing "purity" of white blood; over the past century, to be considered "white" one has had to be "pure" in ancestry. In short, throughout American history, it's been more advantageous to have less Native Americans, more African-Americans, and to preserve the whiteness of the dominant culture.

Once we make the observation of history, the future becomes much less daunting to the discerning mind...

I believe whites have a right to complain, yet the many I speak to or read about here complain with twisted facts. After all these years, whites except being lied to, by media, government, etc. Christopher Columbus didn't discover America, but your history books and holiday still reflect he does. At least 5 white Amercian women ran for President of the United States during the 1800's, yet you never read about. Since everything in history books reflects for lack of better term "white mans greatness" you really don't want to know the truth or another perspective.

Yes, Africans sold other Africans into slavery, but the international slave trade was not the work or idea of Africans. You can pin that on Dutch, Italians and Spanish. The term "***** is an old world Spanish word which means "Black Object."

Is it right to holds whites of today responsible for slavery? No! Is it right to hold them accountable? Yes! It all boils down to accountability for all parties involved. If you look at the way slavery abolishment was handled, the remnants of it still exist 142 years later. Look at the remnants of how immigrants were treated when they arrived to America. How about the after slavery-slavery that took place when the Chinease build the railroads. My point is, our government has never taken steps to bring us together which is why we call ourselves white, black(african american, latino(hispanic), asian(korean, japanease, chinease, etc), arab(iranian, iraqi, kuwaiti, indian, etc) instead of just calling ourselves American, period!

I have written before, America does not have a culture. We have traditions such as thanksgiving and easter, we reconize the culture and traditions of where our great-great-great grand parents came from, but no culture that ultimitely drives our society or reflects our salad bowl society unless you are talking about money. Go to any major city and there's for example a Korea Town or an area where majority Italians or Jewish etc..

For a country that is so-called free, we still confine and ghetto ourselves. (Yes, Beverly Hills is a ghetto of rich people). For a country founded on Christian values, look at how much hate is condoned! Ask Mormans' what Christians did to them. Overrall they recovered and claimed an entire state for themselves.

The colony aka USA is 400 years old, but blacks have only gotten our share for 40 years. We have no home to return to. We have not banks with our own money, we own few corporations, and have even fewer wealthy people. For whites, the world is your oyster. Most people in the world skin wise look like you so you can blend in.

I will never claim whites have it easy, but I am gaged as black first and then the flow chart begins, you are a man/women then your ratings start. I would happily switch places with you.

Affirmative Action is reverse racism. Are you telling me because my skin color is white I must have had a better upbringing? If that isn't racism I don't know what is. Black people should be thankful there ancestors got them out of Africa! Nothing but AIDS and murderous thugs over there, doesn't look like black peoples ancestors did a lot of good living before being taken away to Amercia by the evil whiteman! And lastly, tell me any society out there that wasn't using some form of slavery to build there country. Almost every dominate society has used slaves. Stop watching CNN, it's hurting your thought process. Mitt Romney for President!

What color were the people that sold their own people to Americans. And what country were they betrayed ? Seems like you need to find the root of your anger.
Why don't you stop whining and grow a pair of balls.

Because blacks complain all day everyday about everything and blame whity for everything. So they should set an example if they are going to complain. We don't complain half as much so once in a while its justified can't we whine like yall just once in a while
