I don't think liars go to hell for merely lying - it has to be about the evil those lies perpetuate that makes the difference. A lie can cause a lot of pain or misery in the world - like Bush's story on weapons of mass destruction lots of innocent lives lost over that lie. A lie can also be a deliberate omission - so many people think as long as they don't "say it" they aren't lying, but this is just another form that can be just as hurtful or even more so.
Sometimes honesty can be a hurtful thing as well. Ever notice how many times honest people are called "blunt" or said to be "brutally" honest - because the truth can hurt.
I think intention over all will determine what you pack in your going away bag.

Perhaps the comparing of differences will give some very interesting answers but, if you believe in heaven and hell, then there are different conditions in getting to each place if you want to do it on your own.
The condition to heaven is perfection. Not one things wrong in thought, word or deed, even intention. What I would call an imposibility to we mere humans.
On the other hand, it ain't real difficult to get to hell. Seems to be an open door for all if that is the sort of party you want to go to.
So NO! mere honesty can't send you straight to heaven.

Thee are a least two, if not more questions here. Are Heaven and Hell places? I'd say no. Does one set of bad(?) actions send you one place and an attitude seen as virtue send you to the other? Again I'd say no, no, no and no. Wish morality could be that simple, it isn't. There are many honest thieves, honesty obviously doesn't cover or extend to all actions. Also in WW II many hid Jews from the Nazis, telling lies to preserve innocent lives. I would think such liars more than welcome in Heaven. Also mere honesty is nothing but the absence of defrauding or telling lies, Those without the courage to act go nowhere. Martin Luther said, "Love God and sin boldly."

If that is true that liars go to hell, then the answer would be yes. Honesty in the same sense would send you to heaven, although I would hesitate to use the word 'mere' in this context.

No. There's no such address. Liars reinforce their own fears that lead them to lie. It makes them vulnerable. And unless they're extraordinarily good at it, there's the problem of remembering what lies they've told, and how they might conflict with other lies and lead to exposure. So it's a kind of hell, anyway. But honesty has a wonderful capacity to discomfort antagonists. Most people are trained to be defensive, if not paranoid. So they're alarmed confronting others who are not driven by fear and are not afraid to admit mistakes etc. So honesty is empowering, whatever it costs. Gratuitous honesty, such as telling a lady you don't like her dress even if she hasn't asked your opinion, however, is a different game.

I believe that honesty is an extremely important trait / value and I live by it however I don't think it would get one straight into heaven.
A person can be evil and honest about it, especially if they have very little empathy.

Not a really really good liar. Nothing can send you to hell faster than the truth. Honesty is sometimes, it's own punishment. Knowledge of truth is the forbidden apple.

yes!
i do agree with you.
simple is that liars deceive others from his lie and this can destroy the life of one person
truth leads to honesty means you put everything clear in front of others , not deceiving others and not making anyone to be fallen in misunderstanding so this will make a person to go on right track and never commit any blunder which anyone might can do if wrong picture of anything is put in front of him.
inshort lie is cause of death of one person and truth is the way of freedom from all worries related to our conscience

Liars do not go to hell if they repent their sins to God. Just being honest will not get you to heaven either because you need to have a relationship with God and worship him for any hope of "getting into heaven".

I really hate this, I love your questions, but what does heaven or hell have to do with philosophy? As in the answer of alex, I've always loved the quote, but what does it have to do with heaven or hell? No amount of thinking can get me past this--
premise? I felt that shahbarak gave you the most logical answer, but I've got an absolute BLOCK?
