One little note of interest, Felix Mendelssohn and Franz Schubert wote very litle "sad a pensive music". Most of their music is upbeat. Definately not another Tchiakovski.

Fingle's Cave Overture. We oldsters know it from an old cartoon where the raven of bad luck kept hopping up and down in tempo while following everyone around.
The Italian Symphony is also a fine work-go clarinets!- as well as the oratorios Elijah and Paul.

The Songs without Words for solo piano are very simple but gorgeous!
Also I like the Scottish symphony and the Violin concerto in E minor.

One of his biggest and best works is the oratorio Elijah. Very dramatic and beautiful.
