I was thinking about purchasing a mexican red knee after doing a bit more research. I can't find anywheres that sells them locally, i live in maryland, but lllreptile sells spiderlings. I bought my sulcata there, so i trust the site, but how long does it take before a spiderling reaches full size?

And has anyone else owned one before, any advice?

If you were to buy a spider online, or from a petstore, it's ordered as an exotic reptile. Don't bother responding with your ignorance.

If you have not owned a tarantula before, I would recommend an adult, or at least a "juvenile" that already has its adult patterns and colors and can already eat an adult cricket. Spiderlings can be very delicate and not very forgiving when it comes to mistakes on your part. Brachypelma smithi, the Mexican Red-Knee, is one of the slowest-growing species, like most desert/scrubland tarantulas, so it can actually take about two-three years before it even begins to look like a Mexican Red-Knee! Males will mature faster, but of course, they only live four-six years, compared to a potential 30+ for a female! If you want a long-lived pet, buy a guaranteed female tarantula. The following sites have a really great forum, and a classified section, in which you can find various tarantulas and other invertebrates, both babies and adults, offered for sale by both businesses and private individual hobbyists, like myself.

As with reptiles the growth rate is completely dependent on how often you feed it and the temperature so it's difficult to give an estimate. I honestly can't remember how long mine took to reach adult size but I think it was within a year. Spiderlings need small food and will eat two to four times a week and shed frequently. Keeping them in the mid to upper 80's will speed up their metabolism and growth rate. You also need to keep baby spiders fairly humid, more so then adults. If you have never seen a tarantula shedding, be aware that they usually lay flat on their backs!
