I'm not sure what kind of story you are writing, so it is hard to as what would be the best for the situation, but my favorite smell is the smell of midwestern spring mornings (near rivers or lakes). It's a mish-mash of grass, produce (like corn, soybeans, wheat, and others) growing on farms, the smell of the river or lake nearby, sometimes the smell of rain in there, and the smell of both wildflowers and the flowers in gardens. It's different and yet infinately familiar every day. I have lived in other parts of the US, and it just doesn't smell the same.

Fresh flowers, The flavours from kitchen on a winter's night or any time you are in a great mood to eat, the smell of the fresh fruits and also the garden with wild flowers on a rainy day, the smell of the earth after the first shower of rain....

When I'm hungry, the aroma of my mom's cooking from the kitchen.
When I'm feeling romantic, the scent of Jasmine flowers
When I'm outdoors, the smell from the soil starting to get wet by the rain...that smell of soil..pure nature...hmmmm.

If it is a romantic story...my husband when he's worked all day & he pins me to the wall & kisses me from my lips to my shoulders.
If it is a story about your childhood memories...that would be my grandmother's baking, grass being cut in the spring, daffodil's or honey suckle rippening.
If it is a story of a matured adult...how about the smell of a book, leather, Congac or fine cologne.

Limburger Cheese. Tell you what, you need to go get yourself some in the German section of your grocery. Now open the package and take a deep breath and you will see what I mean. After a deep lung inhale you will give me the 10 points for best answer.

A polo oil. It has a robust scent that stays for the day. Other than that I like cherry scent.
