New Hampshire has excellent seafood as does most of that area in New England. Going to New Hampshire would only take about 30 minutes from Boston so that is worth it. There is a great place just over the border that we went to but everything is so fresh there that you can't go wrong where ever you go. I have never had seafood in Rhode Island. I would drive to Maine if I were you since it isn't that far, just to say you have had Maine lobster. ;)
Have a great trip!! There is so much to do and see there. One trip just isn't enough time.

Ok, a few things to factor in here. The lobsters in Boston are going to be basically the same exact thing you'll get in Maine. However, if you want to say you've had a fresh Maine lobster, there are parts of Maine you can get to in only about an hour or an hour and a half from Boston. Kittery is one of the closest places. But the lobster in Boston, or Cape Cod especially, is going to be delicious as well. So you don't need to drive there, but you can easily make it a day trip, and it's nice there. Some good beaches, etc. Other areas of Maine will take longer (hours) but that's not necessary really.

Yes. You can get a good on just over the New Hampshire border in Kittery. Portland is just another 30 minutes north on 95. If you take route 1 in Maine, there are so many places right on the water where you can get a lobster roll. I never got a lobster roll in NH even though I live there. I always go to Maine. Portsmouth, NH is a must see, as well as Providence, RI. They each have there own charm.
Maine is just about an hour north of Boston, not 200 - 400 miles.

Maine is a great side trip from Boston, particularly this time of year. It's not yet crowded, and everything has opened. There are lobster rolls in nearly every town, but some places I really like include the Lobsterman's Co-op in Boothbay Harbor. (Really full of lobster and not too much mayo).
One of the best known places is in Wiscasset ME, called Red's Eats. They're a little cheaper here, and still pretty tasty! Also if you're travelling w/someone not into the Lobster Scene, they have lots of other comfort foods.
These places are very casual, so no need to dress up for either! Both of these places are under 2 hours from Boston, so it's a nice little day trip.

You don't need to go all the way to Maine..I live in New Hampshire and the lobster rolls are just as good here as they are in Maine..we're right next door. We get the same lobster as they do. I reccommend going to Providence, Rhode Island. Wonderful city!! I would also make a trip to Lake Winnepasauke, New Hampshire. It's absolutely beautiful. Plenty of good seafood joints all around the lake and plenty to do!!

Good lobster doesn't just come from Maine! I like going to Rye Harbor in New Hampshire for rolls with lobster fresh off the boats.. Warren's and Bob's Clam Hut in Kittery, ME is good, Michaels Harbor Side in Newburyport MA has HUGE lobster rolls..
If must stay in Boston, go to Legal Seafoods. It's a tradition.

First I need to say the girl with the name The_cryi, is obviously NOT from Massachusetts. You can drive from Boston to Providence in about 1 hour. From Boston to New Hampshire is about a 30 minute drive. Neither require an over night stay. If your up for shopping, there is an exelent out door outlet mall in Wrentham, there are over 150 stores there, people from everywhere in the world make it a point to stop there when they are in the area. Boston is a beautiful city, and there are many things to do there. You can go on a dinner cruise of the Boston Harbor, the Museam of Science is great with an Omni Theater, and a Planetariam the Omni is like an IMAX, but it seems like your in the movie yourself. If your coming during the summer, Water Country in Portsmith NH is a fun place for the family. Sturbridge village is almost 2 hours away from Boston, but a nice family day. Concord has so many things to do, there is a beautiful pond called Walden Pond, there is a great path to walk around the pond, Henery David Therrault wrote his books while staying on Walden Pond. Don Henley saved the pond from being sold and the land made into condos. In Hingham there is a great place called Worlds End, nice walking area and place to observe nature. If you have any more questions I have done many things in the area and I live in Massachusetts so you can email me anytime, just make the topic with Answers in it. Chefck24@aol.com

Boston is a great place for seafood.
My personal best choice for seafood is a little place on the South Shore in the Brant Rock section of Marshfield. Haddad's Ocean Cafe looks a little run down on the outside and you have to walk through the bar to get to the back where you can be seated in the dining room, but they have the best seafood (some other choices for non-seafood lovers, too) anywhere!
While you are in Boston, don't forget to take a Duck Tour so you'll see our great city by land and by sea.
I'm also partial to the Gardner Museum and the Museum of Fine Arts.
Plus, there are the famous Swan Boat Rides in the Boston Gardens.
My personal favorite best place for breakfast is outside on the patio of the Harbor Hotel. There's a wonderful view of the oceanfront and you'll be able to watch the ferries come in with the South Shore commuters. Great place to people watch.
There's also the new Institute of Contemporary Art featuring a Wolfgang Puck cafe.
The Freedom Trail.
A ferry ride to Provincetown.
Have fun.

You do not have to drive to Maine for lobster rolls. They are commonly offered in many Boston restaurants. KingFish Hall (located in the historic Fanueil Hall Marketplace) and any location of Legal Sea Foods are a sure bet for a good lobster roll.
If you really love seafood, drive up to Essex for lunch at Woodman's of Essex and then hop over to Gloucester that is the soul of Massachusetts' fishing culture.
If you want an amazing meal in New Hampshire, drive up to the town of Littleton and eat at Crustaceans. They have amazing chowder and lobster rolls to die for.
Have fun and enjoy your trip here.

Go to The Summer Shack for lobster rolls in the Boston Area. Its a great casual seafood restuarant with fantastic fresh seafood with Jasper White as the owner/chef. He is a local celeb chef. Can't go wrong.
No need to go to Maine unless you want to drive a few hours.
