I've experienced being called that, & it's not my fault. People call me retarded, crazy, & slow. But I can't really be if I have my college degree. Maybe I'm an educated retard. My 3-yr. old niece has microcephaly & people call her retarded, & that makes me angry & sad. It's not her fault.
How can people be so cruel & discriminatory?

It is very wrong to call ANYONE Retarded or Slow. And it is especially wrong to call a physically or mentally handicapped person Retarded or Slow.
This is just another example of how disrespectful some people have become. It is just bad training and lack of education. Probably the educational system and the family units should share the blame. At one time, major corporations held "sensitivity training", along with "diversity training" which addressed some of these issues. It needs to be taught earlier in life, in my humble opinion.

There can be many reasons why a person is born deformed, mentally challenged, physically hadicapped. Some of those reasons may be from nutritional, chemical, human error, God gave the earth to man to have dominion over it. Satan stole it from man in the garden of Eden and Jesus bought it back for man at the cross. There is a whole spiritual warfare going on all around us. And deception is a tool of satan. Bottom line is like it or not God is God and He can allow whatever He wants to allow, satan is always trying to make God look like the bad guy in every situation. You name it. The more important question that should be being asked is what are we doing to help people who have difficult situations. That is what Jesus taught us. Feed the hungry, care for the dying, Love the unloveables. We are each created in God's image. That's true. I worked with hanicapped kids and they were beautiful. And you could see God in them. The question is, can you see Him in your mirror?

I am so sorry this happens to you, it happens to our family too.
People are ignorant and cruel! This is not right and should not be tolerated!! I had a nurse ask me if my son was slow, I just commented he is autistic.
No it is not anyones fault for being this way, however the more people speak up and not tolerate this name calling and abuse, and this is abuse, the more people will think before the stupidity comes rolling out of there mouth......also the discrimination that happens makes me very irritated! I am sure you know what I am talking about.

Some people are cruel. Some are just thoughtless.
You write like an educated and intelligent person. I can't imagine anyone calling you retarded, slow or crazy.
I am so sorry about your poor little niece. I can't imagine people being that cruel.

It's very wrong. These words are usually uttered by individuals who are really not very educated. For example go to M.I.T. and you will find many people who have what is called Asperger Syndrome, which is a form of Autism, Their disability is one of the greatest assets for a research scientist and many believe that Thomas Edison was one person who had it. Franklin Roosevelt was handicapped by Polio. A persons handicap does not limit their ability to make a difference in society and live full lives.

Actually, alot of people with college degrees are retarded or slow. "Retarded" and "slow" are actual descriptors of someone, only when used in a derogatory fashion have they become so politically incorrect. But someone with mental retardation is retarded, and yes, they are slow. I feel for your daughter because no one should be called that my their peers, maybe they do not fully understand her condition.

I agree. i think it is very very wrong. i have two cousins and a uncle who are "slow" or retarded. but i hate when i hear people call them that and i always get in their face about it. im not gonna lie there have been a few times when i say that to people but hust palyin around they are really not slow, but still i feel really bad cuz i feel that im offending them and i love them with everything and id be damed if i ever let somebody else call them that so i stopped.

I totally agree with you!!! I work with developmentally disadvantaged individuals (mentally retarded.....don't like to call them that) and they all have feelings and emotions just like anyone else does!!! Why people are so ignorant to put a label on a person is beyond me??? They are human beings just like us..just because their I.Q is lower than the "norm" doesn't mean that they should be labelled!!

I like to think that most people are nice even though we always remember a person who is just plain mean. There has to be something wrong with a person that just wants to hurt someone elses feelings to feel good. It makes me angry and sad to hear that you have been hurt by some idiot.
