A low-rent species?

Couldn't help it.

Without interest how could humanity be anything?

Interest in others leads to friendship, love, and reproduction, so without it, the species would literally cease to exist.

Interest in work/hobbies leads to productivity, innovation, and inventions. Without interest, Humanity could never improve.

Interest in other cultures, politics, the adherence to societal rules, and the idea of peace is what allows us to interact. Without this interest, we would kill each other off faster than anyone could cry "global warming!".

I mean, what would happen if Humanity completely "lost interest"? (Some might argue that we've already started to do so...)

Wouldn't we just sit right where we were until we died?

Edit:
Re: Guru's response.
I honestly don't mean to appear flippant when discussing so serious an issue as the situation you describe. However, from a philosophical perspective, what is "survival" if not "interest" in living? If Humanity had "no interest" wouldn't we just unemotionally stand in the path of danger?

Interest is luxury rather than a requirement.

Just today, too many were worried about gunfire over their heads to be concerned with what is of interest to them. Survival trumps interest.

Interest is something that a small fraction of us on the planet can engage in. I saw people running from snipers today. That I can sit and entertain the notion of what interests me is a luxury that most people cannot "afford".

We rarely see how "good" we have it in this world. Something are outside of our interests -- to which I say, "ah, poor us."

I think "interest" might be the wrong word. Or can you call an instinct to survive as an "interest in survival"?

good question
humanity requires caring for my fellow neighbor
and caring requires an interest
in the other persons' well-being
therefore
because i am interested
i do care
and because i do care
i treat my fellow earth-bound "planetmates"
humanely
(with best wishes)
