It is simply an electronic metronome that produces low voltage and low current pulses at regular intervals on wires attached directly to the muscles of the heart. It is used when, for various reasons, the pulses driving the heart from the nervous system are too weak or too irregular for the heart to supply blood properly to the needs of the body.
