When the Europeans first reached the Americas they used the natives as slaves. But they were rebellious and they died very quickly because of the diseases the Europeans brought over. So they decided to use Africans. The Slave trade made many people wealthy and some of the African tribe leaders sold their own people into slavery. Slavery was nothing new people have been enslaving each other for ages. Many used to enslave their captured enemies or the people of a land they took over.

European agriculture in the New World needed workers.

Africans had captured and sold off other Africans, mainly to Arabs along the Mediterranean and the east coast of Africa for about 500 years before 1492.

There was suddenly a huge new market opened for slaves.

A few Africans got rich and acquired European goods in exchange for sending millions of other Africans to Brazil and hundreds of thousands to America and the Caribbean.
