Ferns, vines, and other non-flowering plants are best. Ficus is another great one.

If you are not satisfied with ferns, then you can buy a special light-bulb for plants. They are sold in most garden departments. You wouldn't believe what people grow in closets with these babies. So I'm sure your basement apartment will be no problem.

Water plants. Especially if there is water that comes in when it rains outside.

spider plants and aloe plants are all easy to have in the basement and don't take a lot of sun to live.

I'd say a really nice fake one!! :-) They do have some nice ones now at stores like Big Lots or the likes. They cheer you up and never die! :-)
