I say its better to turn it off every night, to save electricity and let the computer have a break and all, but my brother agrues that you should leave it on. He believes it is hard on the computer for it to have to load everything up every day. Who's right?

Nope, save the power for something else. But you should try to turn your computer ON and OFF just once a day. Your brother is only partially right, and here's why.

Most of the components are tested for 10,000 duty cycles of ON and OFF. In a year, you might do 1,000. Since the computer is likely to run for 7 years, that's only about 7,000 cycles.

Consider the hard drive motor spinning at 7,200 RPM and your CPU chip running at 130 degrees F, instead of getting some time to cool off for a rest. This is probably a good thing. But left on, the fans are only working to draw more DUST into the machine.

But leave the machine on during time periods where you will use the computer now and then.

Good luck and Happy Computing!

no.
I would turn it off when not in use - the longer you leave it on and connected to the web the greater chance you have of getting HACKED- its like leaving a door un locked for a burgler - he just needs to find the right one.
power surges suck too. if its on all the time you could get a power surge to fry everything. You computer will run slower too if left on all the time and parts burn up faster- dust will collect more quickly and could cause a greater chance for a fire when you are not around or sleeping.

Booting a computer is not "hard on it." Provided you shut it down gracefully and don't just switch the power off, turning off the computer when you're not using it is just fine, and can be beneficial in some respects (allows the parts to cool, prevents hackers from trying to break in, etc).

I agree with you. When you turn it off at night you're leaving it off for at least 5 hours, right? I think 5 hours every day more of using electricity adds up. Stick to your ground.

Honestly, if you use power saving features in windows (turn off monitor, turn off hard disks), it probably doesn't make a difference. It's not hard for a computer to reload windows (unless it's that bloated piece of crap vista :D ) so you're brother is talking out of his @$$.

both are, many businesses leave there's on. i dont for reasons you stated, when windows is booted, gives it a chance to index files and put things in order. everything wears out, just like the starter on your car.

as much as i hate to say this, YOUR BROTHER, the computer dont' take up as much power as a 40 watt light, yea eventually would be nice to RESTART the computer, but if you turn it off then turn it back on, yes it's a little hard on everything from your FAN to your HARDRIVE cause of a LITTLE power serge. so it would not hurt to keep it running you wont' notice anything on your power bill!

Interesting question. I leave it on because my computer guru advises it, but I never knew why he said that. So I will be watching this question for answers. thanks for asking it.
